James Gunn has found his footing in Hollywood again.

Months after Disney suddenly fired the Guardians of the Galaxy director in light of old, disturbing tweets resurfacing, Gunn is reportedly heading to the world of the DCEU.

Deadline says that Gunn is writing the sequel to Suicide Squad, and WB has asked him to consider directing it. The film was previously going to be written and directed by Gavin O’Connor, but he has since moved on to other projects.

If it all pans out, a Gunn-directed Suicide Squad could give the limping franchise a much-needed boost of credibility. The first movie was panned by critics when it debuted under the direction of David Ayer in August 2016. Despite the bad reviews, the characters carried it to victory: The movie made $746 million worldwide.

On the other hand, Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been both financial and critical successes. Can he do the same for the Squad?

DC has been re-aligning its film franchise in recent months, and Gunn’s hiring appears to be another step in that mission. We recently learned that Henry Cavill would no longer appear as Superman, as DC turns its attention to launching a Supergirl movie. We also recently learned about a Birds of Prey movie in development.

For their part, the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series has been very disappointed in Disney’s decision to fire Gunn. Production on the threequel is currently on hold, and Dave Bautista said he might leave the series in support of his friend.
