Yesterday’s reveal that actress Claudia Kim is playing Nagini in Fantastic Beasts caused some fans to retaliate, and now J.K. Rowling is responding to accusations.

Ah, another J.K. Rowling controversy from a group of people who I’m officially naming the J.K. Rowling Police. These fans have started thinking it’s ~cool~ to constantly hate on one of the kindest, smartest, most philanthropic women on the planet. They take their criticism too far by bashing Rowling using half-baked arguments.

This week the J.K. Rowling Police are concerned that Rowling / Warner Brothers cast a woman of color to play Nagini, a character who will eventually irrevocably turn into a snake and serve as Voldemort’s pet. The implications don’t sit right with a lot of people, and that’s fair. But before we jump to conclusions so we can pen those sIcK tWeeTs, how about we see what Rowling has in store? We don’t know anything about how Voldemort comes to make Nagini his own, nor do we know why Nagini seems to be willing to follow Voldemort’s orders.

Rowling has noticed some of the backlash, and on Wednesday morning she responded to someone offended by casting an Asian woman as a snake. Turns out Rowling did her research!

I’ve also seen complaints that Rowling only makes diverse characters evil. Apparently they’re forgetting that Hermione became Black, and that a Black woman (Seraphina Picquery) is the head of the United States’ Ministry of Magic. And then there’s Leta Lestrange, who so far doesn’t seem very evil. Oh! Don’t forget Jessica Williams, who’s playing an Ilvermorny Professor who’ll have a larger role in later movies.

We’ll see if Rowling responds to other concerns, like making a woman of color become Voldemort’s servant. I suspect we’ll have to wait for future movies to get context for this one.
