The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar, which is set to premiere in front of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug this weekend, has landed online.

Interstellar marks Nolan’s non-Batman follow-up to the widely successful — both critically and at the box office — Inception, and tells the story of “a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.” Jonathan Nolan penned the script based on theories presented by physicist Kip Thorne.

The inspiring teaser trailer pulls from lots of historical moments and promises that our “destiny lies above us.” We get a brief look at Matthew McConaughey and a rocket launch at the end.

To say the film has an impressive cast would be an understatement. Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Ellen Burstyn, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Bill Irwin, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo and John Lithgow all star in the film, and even Matt Damon will have a small role in the film. We also know that “several plot points are allusions to general relativity and parts of Thorne’s research, including the gravitational red shift that occurs when the character is close to the vicinity of the black hole.”

Paramount also released an official website for the film, as the marketing is sure to have a greater and greater pull as the release date nears. Frankly, we couldn’t be more excited.
