Well, this was certainly unexpected. A new rumor surrounding Christopher Nolan’s tight-lipped sci-fi film Interstellar may revolve around corn. Yes, the grain.

If you want to go into Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar completely void of any spoilers and you don’t want to know how corn may play into the plot, we suggest you stop reading now. The spoilers are very minor, but you’ve been warned.

First, we should set up what we already know about the plot ofInterstellar. The press release gave us a description of the movie that got us closer to seeing what it will be about:

The new script chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

As we previously told you, Interstellar “centers on the discovery of an energy source from the Hawking radiation from a nearby black hole. Extra-dimensional beings that control the black hole may also exist in the plot. Several plot points are allusions to general relativity and parts of Thorne’s research, including the gravitational red shift that occurs when the character is close to the vicinity of the black hole.”

The two descriptions gave us a basic idea what the premise of the film was, but we didn’t really know in what direction the plot could go. The new corn-centric information that was reported by the Fort Macleod Gazette (via Collider) gives us a better idea why they’re making the journey across space:

Set in the future, the movie details the toll climate change has taken on agriculture, with corn the last crop to be cultivated. The scientists embark on a journey through a worm hole into other dimensions in search of somewhere other crops can be grown.

It looks like Nolan will be making Interstellar somewhat of a social commentary on climate change. While this rumor is not confirmed (and likely won’t be for a long time), it wouldn’t be a shock to see it come true.
