Although we won’t be seeing Patrick Stewart as Professor X, at least X-Men: Apocalypse will bring back Ian McKellen as Magneto.

X-Men: Apocalypse may focus on the younger versions of the X-Men, but that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping to see Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart back in their iconic roles as Magneto and Professor X.

While Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy play the characters’ younger selves to perfection, the original stars have captured our hearts, and it’s hard to imagine the franchise without them.

We were therefore saddened last month when Patrick Stewart revealed neither he or McKellen would be back for Apocalypse. But good news: it seems like we’ll at least be seeing the original Magneto.

In a new interview with Oregon Live, Stewart said, “It seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal. But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.”

As X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the 1980s, we wonder how McKellen’s Magneto will be featured. In a flash-forward, or a vision? Or perhaps Wolverine’s memory?

And speaking of Wolverine: while Stewart may not be in Apocalypse, he did reveal in the interview that he’ll probably show up in Wolverine 3.

“What I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I’ve already done,” he teases.

Did everyone else just get way more excited about the Wolverine franchise?
