Rick Moranis is officially on board for Disney’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids continuation starring Josh Gad!

Update (2/12/2020): Back in December, we heard word that Disney was currently in the process of developing a reboot of hit 90s family comedy, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Word of the reboot was especially exciting given that original director, Joe Johnston was also rumored to be involved with the project set to star Frozen II vet Josh Gad.

In even more exciting news, now it looks like we’ll also get to see Rick Moranis return to reprise his role as scientist and father Wayne Szalinski.

According to Deadline, Moranis has officially signed on to star opposite Gad in what is now being referred to as a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel.

Titled Shrunk, the sequel (which is reportedly heading to the big screen and not straight to Disney+), will find Wayne’s son (Gad) following in his father’s footsteps as an aspiring scientist. Things get a bit more complicated however, when just like his father, he accidentally shrinks the kids.

Though fans of the original, and of Rick Moranis’ work, are likely undoubtedly excited to hear that the actor is gearing up to return to the big screen, no one seems to be more excited than Moranis’ forthcoming co-star.

Shortly after news broke, Gad took to Twitter to express his excitement over getting to work with Moranis on Shrunk.

“To say it is a dream come true to once again see #RickMoranis on the big screen is the understatement of the decade. But to say, I get an up seat view of him returning to play one of his most iconic roles is the understatement of the Century,” tweeted Gad. “Welcome back hero!”

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect to see Shrunk hit the big screen.

Original Story (12/5/19):

A new iteration of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids could soon be making its way to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids director Joe Johnston is currently in early talks to direct a reboot of the hit early ’90s flick at Disney.

First hitting theaters in 1992, the original iteration of the action family film starred Rick Moranis as Wayne Szalinski— a scientist and father whose children accidentally end up shrinking themselves down to the size of bugs after accidentally coming into contact with one of their dad’s experiments.

Johnston isn’t the only one who’s currently circling the project. In addition, it’s also been announced that Frozen II star Josh Gad is in talks to star in the reboot.

Gad’s involvement with the reboot might not come as much of a shock to some. Especially given that according to Slash Film, it was Gad who initially proposed the idea to Disney earlier this year.

If Gad officially boards the project, he would be portraying a grown up version of one of the Szalinski kids in the reboot.

Others who’ve already boarded the project behind the scenes include David Hoberman, who will serve as producer on the project, and Todd Rosenberg, who has been tapped to write the script.

There’s currently no word on when we can expect to see the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot premiere, though it’s being reported that Disney plans to release the project in theaters rather than premiering it via Disney+.
