David Harewood, who previously played David Estes in the award-winning Homeland, believes Nicholas Brody deserved to die in the second season of Homeland. But, crucially, could Brody die in the upcoming season?

When the second season of Homeland came to a close, we learnt that David Estes had died, and that Brody was very much still alive. David Harewood has declared though, “I think he had to go. I mean, this was a guy who put on a suicide vest. This was a guy who was prepared to blow up half the American administration — including me!”

He has a point. Brody walked into a room full of senior American government officials with a suicide vest strapped to him, and fortunately for Brody, the trigger failed. Estes had an idea throughout the series that Brody wasn’t who everyone thought he was, and his cooperations with terrorist activity was indeed happening.

Harewood found that he was beginning to agree more with Estes the longer he portrayed him. Harewood is quoted as saying, “I could really see things from his point of view. He was obviously a patriot, and, although he was self-serving, I think his heart was in the right place.” But, this also was Estes’ downfall, especially from a fan point of view. Estes became very self-centred and selfish throughout the second season, and his actions spoke more about his priorities than assessing the larger picture at hand. Harewood notes, “This is a guy who’s a political animal. He wants to climb the greased pole. He’s almost sold his soul, in a sense, to get what he wants.”

However, despite what Harewood thinks, we think it’s far too early for Brody to be killed off, despite Damian Lewis claiming that he has signed a seven season contract with Homeland, and he could be killed off at any point. With Homeland entering its third season in September, Homeland is just entering its prime. The news of a death to Nicholas Brody would be far more likely towards the end of it’s life, and we believe this could happen around season 5 or later. This will all depend on Homeland‘s popularity over the forthcoming years and with Emmy and Golden Globe success already attached to its name, Homeland still has a long way to go. Killing Brody off soon would alienate viewers and detract from its impressive storyline. But, this begs the question of how long they can continue the Nicholas Brody storyline, after finally ending the “is he-isn’t he” storyline of whether Nicholas Brody was a terrorist throughout seasons 1 and 2.
