If you thought there were no more secrets to be found in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, think again.

The Dursleys = the literal worst people on Earth, right?

Where most of the Harry Potter series is exciting and magical, Harry’s Muggle relatives represent a sober normalcy, and seem to exist mainly to reinforce how important friendship, belonging, and imagination really is.

But maybe there’s more to the Dursleys than meets the eye.

A Harry Potter fan on Reddit who goes by iShootWithACamera shared a pretty ingenious theory connecting the Dursleys — specifically their choices of gifts to Harry during his first few years at Hogwarts — to the Deathly Hallows.

The fan has noticed that each of the three gifts represent one of the three Deathly Hallows that Harry discovers during his seventh year in the wizarding world:

First Year The Dursley’s sent Harry a fifty-pence piece, a representation of the Resurrection Stone.
Second Year The Dursley’s sent Harry a toothpick, a representation of the Elder Wand.
Fourth Year The Dursely’s sent Harry a single tissue, a representation of the Invisibility Cloak.

The theory goes on to state that these were the only three Christmas presents the Dursleys ever sent Harry (the other presents being for his birthday). Fans have wondered for a long time why the Dursleys even bothered to send Harry anything at all, and now we know: It appears to be very, very subtle foreshadowing of the three objects that make up the Deathly Hallows.

And of course, this is even more poignant when you recall that Harry actually received his first Deathly Hallow at Christmas that first year at Hogwarts, when Dumbledore returned his father’s Invisibility Cloak to him.

Of course this leads into a bigger debate: We know that J.K. Rowling’s original plan for the Dursleys was a lot more elaborate — one of them was meant to discover magic later in life, and Petunia’s role could have been a lot more expanded — but plans are of course bound to change over a seven-part series. Would they somehow have been connected to the Deathly Hallows? Could Petunia maybe have had one in her possession?

Or was it all just a coincidence? This is of course always a possibility, but iShootWithACamera doesn’t think so, and we’d be inclined to agree.

Whatever the case though, isn’t this just one of those small things that make Harry Potter so great? We might not be expected to take something huge away from this parallel, but it just proves there’s still little bits of magic to be discovered, even after all this time.
