Could Ron and Hermione’s daughter Rose, featured in the Harry Potter play, be the first Weasley for many generations to not be sorted into Gryffindor?

The eighth Harry Potter story, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, opens next week in London.

This week Pottermore has unveiled character portraits of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and their kids (and presumed lead child characters) Albus Potter and Rose Granger-Weasley.

Both Rose and Albus are entering their first year at Hogwarts, and neither have been sorted by the time the play starts.

In the “19 Years Later” epilogue to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, there’s a lot of speculation about where Rose and Albus will go.

Albus frets about going to Slytherin, while Ron jokes to Rose, “If you’re not in Gryffindor, we’ll disinherit you. But no pressure.” (To which Hermione, of course, scolds, “Ron!“)

While Albus Potter’s robes are intentionally left House-less (we all assume it’s because they want to keep his inevitable Slytherin affiliation a secret), Rose’s outfit may have revealed a huge clue about which House she ends up in — and she might be disinherited after all!

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Now, first of all it’s worth noting that the grey cardigan with yellow stripes we see poking out from under her robes looks a lot like a movie costume. We know that Cursed Child will have brand new, year-specific robe designs, so we don’t take the streak of yellow here as absolute proof of either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff — this is merely speculation. (For all we know, there are colored threads from all Houses weaved into the first-year cardigans to promote unity!)

But Hufflepuff definitely would be a welcome — and unexpected — reveal. We know Rose Granger-Weasley takes after her mother, with Ron stating in the epilogue that she, “inherited her mother’s brains.”

J.K. Rowling has offered some further insight into her character on Pottermore, saying, “Rose is like her mother, but more secure, more grounded. She was born to wizards and knows her place in the world. Cherrelle plays her perfectly: bossy but deeply loveable.”

Actress Cherrelle Skeete also has some interesting words about Rose: “Rose is ambitious, obviously her mum is Hermione so she’s got a lot to live up to. I think they’re quite similar in the fact they put a lot of pressure on themselves. And she just wants to do the right thing.”

As we know, ambition is primarily a Slytherin trait, and Rose’s ambition coupled with her mother’s intelligence could also indicate Ravenclaw.

But it’s equally telling that this ambition will be used to “do the right thing,” an indicator that she’s good-hearted and perhaps more inclined to stand up for others than to seek betterment for herself — which would make her a Gryffindor, or potentially a Hufflepuff.

So basically, it’s all up in the air at this point. Knowing what we know about Rose and how the Sorting Hat works, Hufflepuff might seem like the least likely option for her — but, on the surface, don’t most characters in the Harry Potter series display traits that might logically lead us to conclude they’d be in another House than the one they end up in?

Harry, Ron, Neville and Hermione certainly aren’t ‘model Gryffindors’ in their behaviors, strengths and weaknesses, yet above all and for different reasons, this is the House they chose for themselves, and it ended up being a perfect fit.

Who knows why Rose might consciously or subconsciously choose another House besides Gryffindor? Maybe she doesn’t want to be ‘another Weasley,’ and seeks to break away, but she also doesn’t want Ravenclaw because she doesn’t want to let her intelligence define her. Or maybe she simply decides to relax and let the Sorting Hat decide — which would be so very Hufflepuff of her.

If she is indeed a Hufflepuff, this might also be an indicator that in this future Hogwarts, students aren’t as defined by their Houses as they were in Harry’s time. Rose could be a smart, ambitious Hufflepuff whose best friend Albus is a Slytherin, and if Scorpius joins the gang, too, perhaps he’ll break the Malfoy tradition and end up in Gryffindor (or Ravenclaw).

Or else Rose’s cardigan colors are simply misleading, and she’ll be a Gryffindor like all the Weasleys that came before her. After all, when we posed this question to our Twitter followers, everyone seems split about which House they think she’s in:

What do you think, Harry Potter fans? Could Rose Granger-Weasley be a Hufflepuff?

At any rate, the best thing about all this is that we can speculate like it’s 2007 again, and we LOVE it.
