The upcoming stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — officially “the eighth story” — is already in the middle of a bidding war amongst book publishers, according to a report.

Harry Potter fandom website The Rowling Library says that at least two publishers are already competing to nab the rights to publish Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as a book, which would presumably be an exact copy of the play’s script but in printed form for the masses.

No further information is available at this time, and I can’t be certain that The Rowling Library’s sources are legit (no offense, Rowling Library — I like you though!), so take this with a grain of salt for now.

However, if this is true, it may indicate that Rowling and her team are interested in getting this out in book form sooner (like the end of 2016) rather than later (like the year 2018). I think the only thing we can say for sure is that it won’t be out before the stage play opens this June.

One reason it may be wise to publish it sooner rather than later: Fans who see the show when it opens on London’s West End this summer will undoubtedly take to Tumblr, Facebook, etc. to share revelations. That’s not an ideal way for new pieces of canon to be introduced to the world.

But the team behind The Cursed Child have to walk a fine line, because they don’t want the release of the manuscript to hurt ticket sales.

I’m absolutely certain that the script will be published at some point. Stage plays do it quite frequently, and demand to consume this story following Harry and his son Albus after the events of Deathly Hallows is too high. Plus, I like to think that J.K. Rowling is eager to make this play as accessible to the world as possible. In case she’s not eager, I wrote an open letter in which I pleaded for her to make this available to everyone in the world as soon as possible.

This news reminds me: How soon until we hear about Warner Brothers knocking on Rowling’s door about turning The Cursed Child into a movie?

The play opens this summer at the Palace Theater on London’s West End and is produced by the Potter author. Here’s who’ll play Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and here are 70 questions we’re hoping Harry Potter and the Cursed Child answers once it opens.
