Freeform is pulling the plug on Famous In Love.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to cancel Famous In Love after just two seasons on air comes down to being unable to reach a deal with Hulu, who serves as the series’ streaming partner and also owns the SVOD rights to the show.

The series is reportedly fairly expensive to make and Freeform was hoping for a larger financial contribution from Hulu in order to help fund a third season of the show. Meanwhile, a source close to the project revealed to THR that while Freeform might be interested in more money, the network has yet to provide the online streaming giant with a formal proposal to save the series.

Regardless of whether or not Freeform delivers said formal proposal, it sounds unlikely that Hulu would approve the new budget. Though Famous In Love’s first season garnered enough buzz for the series to get a season two renewal, the show failed to perform as well in its second season.

While the first season of the series raked in an average of 330,000 viewers, those numbers plummeted to 254,000 in season two.

The series, which is based off a book series of the same name by Rebecca Serle, tells the story of a girl named Paige (Bella Thorne) suddenly finds herself thrust into the world of Hollywood stardom after she lands the role of the century in Hollywood’s next big blockbuster franchise.

The series was expected to do well, not only because of Thorne’s popularity as an actress, but also because it was being helmed by Pretty Little Liars showrunner I. Marlene King. With that in mind, we’re sure many will be stunned to hear the news that Freeform is calling it quits on the drama after just two seasons.

The network might be pulling the plug on its sophomore drama, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be ending their relationship with the Pretty Little Liars creator.

King’s next project for Freeform will find the showrunner returning to the world of PLL with upcoming spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists.

The series, which stars PLL alumns Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse, is set to premiere next year on May 13, 2019.
