In addition to announcing a slew of “Untitled DC” film dates on Wednesday afternoon, Warner Bros. has set dates for two “Untitled WB Event” films.

The two movies are penciled in for November 16, 2018 and November 20, 2020. It’s the same day of the year that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will debut in 2016.

In March, a report from The New York Times indicated that Warner Bros. is aiming to create a trilogy, so our educated guess is that these two “Untitled WB Event” films are actually Fantastic Beasts 2 and Fantastic Beasts 3.

Why doesn’t the studio just come out and say so? They’re probably not ready to publicly commit to those films this far out in case the first movie doesn’t work out.

Placing each of the three Fantastic Beasts movies two years apart is similar to what the studio decided to do for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. The Lord of the Rings prequels have made $1.017 billion and $958 million respectively, spaced one year apart from one another. The third and final film in the Middle Earth saga will be released this December.

(By the way: This writer spoke about a three-years-three-movies theory on the latest MuggleCast yesterday. As it turns out, I was off by a year.)

The films may be spaced two years apart from one another so that Rowling has enough time to balance writing the screenplays with her numerous other projects.

Fantastic Beasts will be released November 18, 2016. The screenplay is by J.K. Rowling and the movie will be produced by David Heyman. They will use Leavesden Studios – the same place they shot all eight Harry Potter movies – to film the Newt Scamander spinoff.
