From zombies to building simulators, these are the best games in 2020 to look forward to.

Each year, the video game industry produces more hits than before. With these coming games in 2020, the ante will rise even higher.

2019 saw games like Control and Death Stranding prove their gumption as main-stay story driven, action titles, while surprise newcomers such as Untitled Goose Game brought the indie side of the gaming industry to the forefront.

We saw a new Pokémon Generation, continued updates to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the excellent Luigi’s Mansion 3, and a remake of Link’s Awakening. While PS4, Xbox One, and PC games led the front on AAA action games, the Nintendo Switch saw its most succesful year yet with new releases in exclusive IPs.

In 2020, it seems as though the industry is leaning more toward heavy, gritty stories, such as The Last of Us Part 2 and Half-Life: Alyx. Old series will be revived, as remakes and reboots bring long-lost series back into the current-gen console swing.

The end of 2020 will see two new major console releases in Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X. There’s no telling where the games in 2020 will go from there, but one thing’s for sure: the gaming industry is about to see a revolution unlike anything it has ever seen.

Best new games in 2020

‘Animal Crossing: New Horizons’

The Animal Crossing series last released a main-series entry in 2012’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS. Needless to say, it’s been way too long since a full Animal Crossing video game has hit the market.

This time around, players live on an island and are able to place furniture and decorations anywhere they like. Rivers are no longer a problem now that you have a pole vault ability, with upgrading your home and loveable neighbors rounding out the coming Nintendo Switch simulator game.

‘The Last of Us Part 2’

The Last of Us is widely considered to be one of the best video games of all time. With its masterful storytelling and well-paced limited item resources, the first Last of Us offered players a realistic telling of what living in the zombie apocalypse might actually feel like.

With The Last of Us Part 2, Ellie is in charge, as she takes over the role of the main playable character from the gruff Joel. Packed with exciting stealth and thrilling drama to boot, The Last of Us Part 2 is easily one of the most anticipated games in 2020.

‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’

It’s been in development hell for way too long, and now, it seems like the Final Fantasy VII Remake will actually come out.

Following ex-soldier Cloud Strife and his battle with his inner demons, this action/adventure JRPG will feature a completely revamped telling of the classic 1997 PS1 game. This title is a very big deal, with it bringing one of the most iconic and critically acclaimed video games onto current-gen consoles with a fresh skin.

‘Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise’

A sequel to the cult classic 2010 title Deadly Premonition, the coming mystery title promises to enthrall its core fanbase with yet another zany, off-the-rails production. While the first title found its cult following for its ridiculous sound and graphics presentation, the second Deadly Premonition will likely up the production value of the series from laughable to laudable.

‘Halo Infinite’

Easily the most exciting Xbox Series X launch title, Halo Infinite will be the sixth main-series entry of the critically acclaimed Halo series. While little is known about Master Chief’s coming adventure, we were treated to a beautiful debut trailer that was crafted using the game’s engine. Beautiful and epic, Halo Infinite will be the launch title to end all launch titles.

‘LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will rebuild the block-building action series from the ground up, as the game will include all main-series Star Wars movie adaptations to date.

Far from a simple port, Skywalker Saga will see to it that every film in the series has a brand new telling. As The Rise of Skywalker hit theatres in late 2019, the hype for video game adaptations of everyone’s favorite space drama will be off the charts.

‘Bravely Default 2’

The Bravely Default games are some of the best JRPGs in the genre, and now, a proper third title (yes, it’s actually titled 2) will continue the epic Square Enix quest series on the Nintendo Switch.

If you haven’t picked up either of the Bravely Defualt titles for the Nintendo 3DS, do yourself a favor and get caught up on them now before the third title’s release.

‘Half-Life: Alyx’

The Half-Life series was thought to be dead, as it has been since 2007’s Half-Life 2: Episode 2 that we have seen any update to the hit first-person shooter series. With VR installment Half-Life: Alyx coming soon, it could very well be only a matter of time until Half-Life 3 is actually announced. Alyx looks fun, but it’s likely a test to see if audiences are still interested enough in the Half-Life series to warrant the development of a third main-series title.
