Last night, Empire‘s season 2, episode 2, “Without A Country,” brought us back to the music. Let’s see where they ranked!

After a mostly music-less season 2 premiere we were very happy to hear some new tunes on last night’s second episode of Empire. We were given three new songs, as well as a few celebrity cameos.

Kelly Rowland played Lucious’ mother in a flashback and we discovered that she may’ve had a few mental issues. Ludacris’ performance was unlike any other character he’s played, and he looked mighty fine in uniform. Becky G spiced up a few scenes with Hakeem and we don’t think that’s the last we’ll see of her.

Now let’s get to the music!

6. ‘Hourglass’ by V Bozeman

We caught a glimpse of V with Anika in the beginning of the episode. V’s voice sounds like velvet and very reminiscent of Whitney Houston’s. We’re glad Cookie stepped in to aid V because Boo Boo Kitty wasn’t cuttin’ it.

5. ‘Sorry Just Don’t Cut It’ by Jamal (Jussie Smollett)

This is the song that Jamal wrote for Hakeem. Hakeem said he liked it but then things got awkward when he dropped the bomb that he wasn’t returning to Empire. Oh, and that he leaked his album online. Jamal couldn’t keep his cool and said that he’d slap Hakeem with lawsuits but Hakeem isn’t worried. He’s on to the next… and that next is Lyon Dynasty.

4. ‘Do It’ by Valentina (Becky G)

When Valentina showed up for tryouts we were all seriously impressed with her singing skills. Although some viewers recognized that she’s Becky G! Valentina wasn’t intrigued with the offer of joining a girl group and we think she’d be even less inclined had she heard the idea for its name — “Rainbow Sensation.” Hakeem was certainly impressed with Valentina as well, so much so that we later see them sharing a bath. Where’s Boo Boo Kitty now?

3. ‘Get No Better (2.0)’ by Tiana (Serayah)

When Hakeem drops in on Tiana to ask her about joining Rainbow Sensation he (and we!) gets a glimpse of her performing “Get No Better (2.0).” The song is fun and catchy and oddly enough Hakeem walked in during the perfect lyrical moment. We’re glad that these two are back on good terms, even though Tiana was offended by Hakeem’s offer. Once again Cookie had to come and save the day from another artist almost leaving Lyon Dynasty.

2. ‘Born To Love U’ by Jamal (Jussie Smollett)

It was so adorable to see Jamal perform “Born To Love U” in Michael’s presence. Even though it was mainly for his interview we couldn’t help but gush over these two. We can definitely see this song being a hit on the radiowaves because of its lyrics and sick beat. Although we couldn’t make this our number one pick because of reasons you’ll read below.

1. ‘Snitch Bitch’ by Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard and Petey Pablo)

How could this song not make number one? First off, it’s the joint that Lucious dropped while IN the joint. Who does that? A few things came to order for this to happen or namely, one person. Thirsty Rawlings. Once Lucious made the decision to be represented by Thirsty everything changed. He got his medicine back and then he was given all the tools to make the recording happen — with his boys as well. Then when Luda–er–Officer McKnight busted into the recording session and took the laptop, Thirsty had him beaten so he could have the track released.

It all came full circle when Cookie and Hakeem heard “Snitch Bitch” on the radio while sweeping up the new Lyon Dynasty.

We absolutely can’t get this song out of our heads.
