Disney is at work on a live-action movie centered on 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil, and today we’re learning Emma Stone is in talks to star.

The Hollywood Reporter says Stone is in “early negotiations,” and Disney is hoping to begin filming the “origin story” later this year.

Choosing Stone is an interesting and unique choice for the studio. At 27 years old, the actress would obviously be much younger than the character we saw in the 1996 animated movie.

Work began on the live-action Cruella late last year, with Fifty Shades screenwriter Kelly Marcel being hired to pen the script.

The live-action Cruella tale will follow in the footsteps of other live-action retellings by Disney including Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie, Cinderella starring Lily James, and Into the Woods starring Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, and Chris Pine. And they’re not stopping there — throughout 2015 we heard time and time again how Disney was actively developing several live-action movies based on classic animated stories (from Aladdin to Winnie the Pooh).

Later this year Disney will open live-action movies including The Jungle Book and Alice Through the Looking Glass. Next year we’ll get to see Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast.

Stone is best known for lead roles in Easy A and The Amazing Spider-Man.
