Last night, Ellen beat out Amy Schumer, George Lopez, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Kevin Hart in the Choice Comedian category, and took to the stage with an incredible, heartfelt speech about what it means to feel wanted by this fickle industry:

“How convenient, I was just on my way to the beach and I’d forgotten my surf board,” Ellen quipped, before growing more serious.

“It feels good to be chosen, but there was a time in my life where I was the opposite of being chosen, because I was different,” Ellen told the audience.

Speaking particularly to the teens who feel pressure to fit in with their peers, she added, “What makes you different right now makes you stand out later in life. So you should be proud of being different, you should be proud of who you are […] Being unique is very important. Fitting in is really not all that matters.”

She concluded by dedicating the award to her wife, Portia de Rossi — the pair just celebrated their wedding anniversary!

“What an amazing day this is,” she said. “This is my seven year wedding anniversary.”
