Disney’s live-action Lion King prequel has officially found two of its stars.

According to Deadline, actors Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Aaron Pierre have both been cast in Disney’s follow up to its live-action The Lion King.

The forthcoming film is set to serve as a prequel to the 2019 family feature, and center on further exploring the mythology of the characters— including the origin story of Simba’s father, Mufasa.

For his part, Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) is set to take on the role of Mufasa. Meanwhile, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7) will voice the role of Tata.

Pierre and Harrison Jr. are the first of what is expected to be a star-studded voice cast for Disney’s next installment.

Behind the camera, the Lion King prequel is set to be directed by Academy Award winning director Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk, Moonlight).

Jenkins, who was announced to be helming the project in September of last year, said he was drawn to the project having grown up with the beloved 1994 animated classic.

“Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true,” said Jenkins of directing the movie when his involvement was first announced.

Others involved behind the scenes include Jeff Nathanson, who penned the script for the 2019 movie and will return to pen the script for the prequel.

Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see The Lion King prequel premiere in theaters.
