Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s Willow series has found its newest director in Stephen Woolfenden.

According to Deadline, director Stephen Woolfenden has officially come aboard to serve as helmer for the pilot episode of the all new Willow series coming down the pipeline at Disney+.

The series, which is based off of the 1988 film of the same name, has changed hands on the director a number of times since it first went into development back in 2019.

Last October, we learned that In the Heights and Crazy Rich Asians helmer, Jon M. Chu had signed on to direct.

But while Chu seemed enthusiastic to take on the Willow series given his lifelong love of the 80s movie, the director stepped down toward the beginning of the year, citing scheduling conflicts.

From there, the task of directing Willow fell to Jonathan Entwistle, who bowed out in April, making way for Woolfenden to step in.

For his part, Stephen Woolfenden, is no stranger to the fantasy adventure genre, having previously worked on Starz’s juggernaut adaptation of Outlander.

Others involved behind the scenes include showrunnner Jonathan Kasdan (Solo) and Wendy Mericle (Arrow). In addition, Ron Howard (who directed the original movie which was based on a story by George Lucas) will serve as an executive producer on the series along with original film writer, Bob Dolman.

For Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s Willow series, the Outlander vet will be serving as a prudicng director, and is set to helm the first two episodes of the series.

In front of the camera, the series is set to star Ruby Cruz, Ellie Bamber, and Erin Kellyman.

The series is set to film in Wales out in the UK, though currently, there’s no word on when we can expect the Willow series to debut via Disney+.
