Dexter will return to our screens on June 30, 2013, for potentially its final season.

After the most climactic and thrilling ending to Dexter‘s seventh season, expectations are being set very high as Dexter will return on June 30 for potentially its final season.

The early arrival of Dexter‘s airing have spread fears that this forthcoming season could well and truly be rushed, and that the potential ending of Dexter could be a huge disappointment after season seven. But, Showtime entertainment president, David Nevins, leapt at the opportunity to put these qualms to rest.

Nevins said, “They had a lot of advance warning [that this was happening] and they know where they’re going,” he said. “No less production time; a little less vacation time.”

This would have been a logical decision made by Showtime and the writers of Dexter, with the upcoming season tailing on from season seven, almost a “Part-Two” scenario. We can conclude that this news was probably agreed many, many months ago when the seventh season was in its pre-production stage.

However, Nevin did decline to comment about whether season eight could be the last. Nevins said, “I’m not making any announcements today about when Dexter will end. I will clarify that before Dexter goes on the air. There’s a clear end game in place but I can’t talk about it just yet. The decision is ultimately a creative decision [as] Dexter is to Showtime what Batman is to Warner Bros. I want to take care of it.”

Naturally, this kind of comment is generally bad news. With a “clear end game in place” season eight should be the last with that comment, as the writers will have tried to tie everything up and have a clear conclusion to the series. The fact that the decision will be made via a “creative decision” can lead to the tarnishing of a series, with many television series in the past faltering terribly by going that one step too far.

For the fan’s sake, we can only hope that Dexter‘s end game is that of a peaceful resolution and one that could really mark a stamp of greatness for a television show adored by millions around the globe. And, if Dexter is to Showtime what Batman is to Warner, it really needs to have that logical and structural ending.

Dexter will return to Showtime on June 30, at 9PM ET/PT.
