Michael C. Hall has revealed some interesting news regarding Dexter season 8 and has shared his thoughts about the Dexter season 8 finale, but most importantly, the relationship with Dr. Evelyn Vogel.

Dexter season 8 returns to our screens in just two days and we’re all anticipating this season entirely. Michael C. Hall has been talking about the upcoming season and is focused on “bringing it home” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The interview touches primarily on the eighth season and Hall gave some interesting quotes in regards to the final season.

When asked about the Dexter season 8 premiere, Hall said, “Well, of course, Deb found out [he’s a serial killer]. Then over the course of the seventh season we saw Dexter managing the way that’s changed their relationship and seeing maybe that, perhaps, she can live with that information and he can continue [his pattern].”

“With the cliffhanger that ends the seventh season, all bets are off. For the first time the person who’s always revered and looked up to him is turning his back on him, and that’s sent him into a bit of a spiral.”

We’ve seen evidence of this throughout the trailers that Showtime have released to the public and it’s safe to say that the relationship between Dexter and Debra will be at its lowest point, and most likely until the ending of the series.

Hall on Dr. Evelyn Vogel

Hall also spoke about the introduction of Charlotte Rampling, who will star as Dr. Evelyn Vogel in the final season.

When asked about whether there would be a romantic relationship in the series at all, Hall responded with a surprising, “Yes, but the primary relationship with a female is a more maternal figure.”

We assume that this will be Vogel, and it’s somewhat terrifying to think that. This just cannot happen, right?

Hall continued when speaking about Vogel, “The presence of Dr. Vogel in his life, this woman who did as much as anyone to fashion the code [when he was a kid], she’s encouraging Dexter to believe his humanity is a misguided indulgence and who he’s really meant to be is a psychopath and all the other stuff is bogus. It’s a reasonable argument.”

“Dexter isn’t so good at being human. He’s always been an effective killer. His appetite for humanity has compromised his effectiveness. But something that’s always existed in him is an appetite for rebellion. So if he’s told he can’t be somebody, he’s going to want to defy that diagnosis — to his and many people in his world’s peril.”

We also have our hands on a clip from Dexter season 8 episode 1, with one of the first encounters between Vogel and Dexter.

But, what does this mean for Hannah McKay? This character appeared to be the one love interest that seemed concrete since Rita’s death, and with her return during the final season, we expect this go against Dexter on a huge scale. She will be out for revenge.

Hall talks Dexter season 8 finale

Hall was also pressed when questioned about the Dexter season 8 finale, which will close the curtains on the series itself on September 15 2013. Hall is quoted as saying, “I’ve been an advocate for having a dialog with the writers and having a sense of how to best bring this story home. Not wrap everything up with a tidy bow, necessarily, but find some sort of conclusion.”

Hall said, “We based the first season on [Jeff Lindsay’s] first book. We didn’t base subsequently seasons on subsequent books because we didn’t want to do a different version of the same thing. There was a desire to explore the blurred line between his emerging humanity and his psychopathy.”

“There has to be an end game. Once Deb found out, it felt like we were moving toward a place where the world as we knew it would have to end.”

We expected that this would be the case. After a wobbly sixth season, the series rejuvenated itself in the seventh season and once that ending happened in the seventh season, Hall is completely correct when saying that there had to be an end game soon.

Hall said of the Dexter season 8 finale, “I have a good sense of the broad strokes…I’m pleased. I’m intrigued and compelled where things are headed. The end is not something I pitched or lobbied for.”

“I talk about where I imagine Dexter to be or where he’s coming from. There are many people [involved with the show] who inform what he ultimately ends up being. I’m along for the ride.”

Dexter season 8 premieres on Sunday evening over on Showtime.
