Dexter‘s Debra Morgan begins her healing process after speaking with Dr. Evelyn Vogel, but the episode ends on a dramatic climax. What is going on with Debra?

Dexter season 8 episode 4 “Scar Tissue” was full of surprises, and not just for Debra Morgan, but most unexpectedly for Vince Masuka. Vince, who has had a relatively quiet season so far, learned that he’s a father in an awkward scene where a “beautiful” student came to visit him in his office.

Vince tried his usual charm expecting the student to be a new intern, but she in fact turned out to be his daughter. Vince used a sperm bank years ago, and now he’s learned he’s a Dad. In the funny, but messed up scene, we learn that they share the same eyes, but crucially, the same laugh. It was a strange scene, and why it was included, we’ll probably never know to the full extent.

But, onto more important aspects of the episode. As our readers commented last week that Vogel was not to be trusted, they sure were right. Vogel has begun the strenuous task of trying to cure Debra’s poisoned mental state as she continues to struggle with the death of Maria LaGuerta, whom she murdered.

Vogel is doing the job she knows best, and requests Debra visits the scene of the murder and walk her through what happened. Vogel pinpoints every move, every decision and tries to clarify that Debra had absolutely no choice but to shoot Maria.

However, Vogel also attempts another strategy which may have worked on Dexter, but certainly didn’t on Debra. Vogel has archived several interviews between herself and Harry Morgan, when Harry was deeply concerned about Dexter’s path to becoming a serial killer.

We learned early on in Dexter season 8 that Vogel helped create the code with Harry, but what we didn’t know until last night was that Harry struggled with the code, which mirrors Debra in this current season.

Debra witnessed a video tape of Harry not coping with Dexter’s psychopathic state and then went digging to unearth whether there was any truth in Harry committing suicide. Debra waits until she’s in the car with Dexter before confronting the issue with her brother.

Dexter confirms that Harry did die of suicide after overdosing on his heart medication, and Debra immediately said, “was it because of you?” Dexter replies, “He thought he created a monster.” And, to that, we got the almighty cliffhanger.

Debra nervously says, “I think I know how he felt…why he killed himself. But he only got it half right.” Debra then grabs hold of the steering wheel and jerks it sharply, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and shoot into a lake.

A fisherman on the bank of the lake jumps in and pulls Debra from the car. Dexter is unconscious and the car is sinking. Debra is pulled to the shore, before heading back into the water after realising her massive mistake. The episode ends with Debra surfacing with Dexter in her arms.
