The CW could be spicing up its 2019-2020 teleiviosn lineup with four new pilots that are bound to pique your interest!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The CW has ordered pilots for four new dramas — including two series that would serve as spinoffs for hits Jane the Virgin and Riverdale.
The network announced on Wednesday (January 23) that they’d picked up pilots for Jane the Novela, Katy Keene, Lost Boys, and a reboot of Nancy Drew.
Though The CW has ordered pilots for the aforementioned titles in addition to Greg Berlanti’s highly anticipated Batwoman series, the jury’s still out on which of these new series will earn a spot on the network’s 2019-2020 television slate.
One interesting thing to note about the announcement is that all the series are based on notable intellectual properties, meaning the fanbase is already there.
Here’s what we know about the four new pilot orders:
Jane the Novela
Described as an anthology series, the Jane the Virgin series is being described as a telenovela anthology series. Each season of the series would be based off of a different fictional novel “written” by Jane Villanueva. Jane star Gina Rodriguez is expected to return to narrate the series as Jane.
Other Jane the Virgin vets set to return include writer Valentina Garza, showrunner Jennie Snyder Unman, producers Ben Silverman, Joanna Klein, Jorge Granier, and Gary Pearl.
Katy Keene
The CW is looking to strike gold twice with yet another Riverdale spinoff. Much like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Katy Keene is based off of yet another group of iconic Archie Comics characters.
Written by Riverdale and CAOS showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Katy Keene is being described as a musical dreamed. It follows the lives of four 20-something friends chasing their dreams of making it in New York City on Broadway, and in the music and fashion industry. It sounds a lot like Glee meets Archie Comics to us, which would be incredibly fitting given that Roberto-Sacasa also served as a producer on the hit Fox series.
Untitled Nancy Drew drama
Haling from The O.C. creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the series is set to center on a slightly aged up Nancy Drew. In this adaptation, Drew is 18 years old and the story takes place the summer after her high school graduation.
Unlike most teens her age, Drew isn’t college-bound. Instead, a family tragedy finds her sticking around her hometown where she finds herself wrapped up in a murder investigation.
Lost Boys
It’s no secret that the network has been looking to turn Lost Boys into a series. In fact, we first heard word about a Lost Boys reboot back in 2017, but The CW opted to push the project back, as there was no room on the schedule for the proposed reboot.
iZombie-helmer Rob Thomas is still slated to spearhead Lost Boys, but the project has gone through a bit of a rework in the time it’s been sitting on the shelf. Originally, Thomas had planned to reboot Lost Boys as an anthology series, but now, it’s looking like the reworked version will be closer to its 1987 source material, which should make fans of the vampire classic incredibly happy!
