One of the United States’ biggest theater chains is launching a monthly subscription service to compete with the wildly popular MoviePass.

The problem is, Cinemark’s new subscription service offers way fewer movies per month when compared to MoviePass.

For $8.99 per month, the Cinemark Movie Club gets you into one 2D movie per month, plus 20% off concessions and no online fees when booking tickets. You can get an extra ticket for $8.99 if you wanna bring a friend in at the same price.

Notably, Cinemark’s Movie Club will roll over unused tickets to the next month. It works at all of the theaters they own, including Century Theatres, CinéArts, Tinseltown and Rave Cinemas.

“We are thrilled to launch our proprietary movie membership program that is completely consumer research-driven,” said Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi. “Based on the feedback we received, we designed Movie Club with all of the features and benefits that moviegoers desire most in a membership program without any of the hassle, enabling our guests to enjoy the moviegoing experience with their friends and family.”

Unfortunately, Cinemark’s offer is not a bargain when you compare it to MoviePass. The latter offers you one movie per day at many of your local theaters. What’s more, Cinemark Movie Club isn’t an enticing buy when you’re only getting access to the theater once a month.

The Cinemark Movie Club appears to be the first crack at competing with MoviePass from the theater chains. We wouldn’t be surprised to see AMC try something similar in the year ahead.

MoviePass is part of Hypable’s 2017 Holiday Gift Guide. It’s kinda perfect for the movie lover in your life.
