Starz’s upcoming Blindspotting spinoff series has officially found its cast.

Update (12/1/2020): In case you missed it, David Diggs and Rafael Casal’s hit indie dramedy, Blindspotting, is officially being turned into a series over at Starz. Now, we finally know who will be joining original film star Jasmine Cephas Jones in starring in the forthcoming series.

In a press release sent out on Tuesday (December 1), the premium cable network revealed that the series has officially started production out in Los Angeles as well as in Oakland. To celebrate the start of production, the network also revealed the official cast for the highly anticipated series.

Actors Atticus Woodward, Jaylen Barron, as well as recording artist Benjamin Earl Turner, have all been cast as series regulars. In addition, Casal (who also serves as showrunner) will be reprising his role as Miles in a recurring role for the series.

The aforementioned stars join Jasmine Cephas Jones who will reprise her lead role as Ashley, a woman who is nipping at the heels of a middle-class life in Oakland until Miles, her partner of 12 years and the father of their son, is suddenly incarcerated.

In a statement announcing the start of production as well as the cast for the show, Casal said: “This story, the incredible cast and production are a dream team. We are making the kind of show we have long hoped to see on television, centered around just some of the amazing kinds of characters the Bay Area has to offer.”

For his part, Diggs added: “Figuring out a way to bring The Bay to life in a half-hour comedy space has been so rewarding. Ultimately, this is a story about how a broken prison system affects all of us and, like the film, we’re using comedy to talk about very real systemic effects in the country with the largest prison population in the world.”

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect the Blindspotting series to debut via Starz.

Original Story (9/10/2020):

Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal’s Blindspotting is getting its own spinoff series at Starz.

Deadline reports that Starz has ordered a television spinoff series based on the 2018 dramedy, Blindspotting.

Written, produced, and starring Rafael Casal and Hamilton vet Daveed Diggs, the film hit theaters in 2018 following a successful opening at Sundance Film Festival.

Set in Digg’s hometown of Oakland, the film finds Casal and Diggs playing childhood best friends who suddenly find themselves in a spot of trouble.

It’s especially a bit of a pickle for Diggs’ Collin, who’s just days away from the end of his probation and looking forward to putting the infamous arrest on his record behind him. His chance of starting over, however, winds up jeopardized after a life-changing missed curfew.

At Starz, the Blindspotting spinoff series will manifest in a half-hour dramedy written and executive produced by Diggs and Casal.

In addition, Casal will serve as showrunner on the series, where he’ll also have a recurring role.

Casal and Diggs aren’t the only ones from the film set to return.

In addition, Jasmine Cephas Jones (who also starred in Hamilton on Broadway alongside Diggs) will return to reprise her role as Ashley for the spinoff series.

The show will follow along as Ashley finds herself forced to move in with her partner/baby daddy, Miles’ family when Miles suddenly winds up incarcerated.

In a joint statement announcing the news of a Blindspotting spinoff series at Starz, Casal and Diggs said: “Let us put you up on game, bruh. No description will encompass the complexity of a ‘Blindspotting’ series, ya dig?”

“So just get juiced, cuz’ it stars Jasmine Cephas Jones, it’s set in Oakland and we’re making it, so it’s lightweight finna to be hella good and the soundtrack will indeed slap. Oh Boy.”

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect the spinoff series to debut via Starz.
