During a Disney earnings call today, the studio confirmed that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct The Avengers 2!

CEO Bob Iger made the announcement and also revealed that Whedon is working on a live action television series featuring Marvel characters. That news initially surfaced in July, but we didn’t know if Whedon was involved.

Released this past May, The Avengers reached massive critical and box office success thanks to its solid story, characters, and direction. It grossed $1.4 billion worldwide – $616 million of which was domestic.

Whedon was asked at San Diego Comic-Con in July if he’d be interested in taking on a sequel, and at the time he said he wasn’t sure because he had a lot on his plate. In May he said “he was torn” on the idea.

UPDATE: Disney released a statement, detailing the future of Joss Whedon and Avengers 2.

“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
