It’s hard to think summer movie season 2018 started all the way back in February with the massive hit Black Panther.

And now here we are at the tail-end of August, soaking up the glorious late-summer rom com miracle that is Crazy Rich Asians. And never forget in between it all was Thanos snapping his fingers and making half the universe disappear. As we bid adieu to this year’s summer blockbusters, join us in a look ahead at the summer 2019 movie season.

Untitled Avengers

The yet-to-be-titled next installment of the Avengers franchise has everyone wondering: is Thanos’ havoc permanent? Well, the easy answer is ‘no’ because there’s no way those important superheroes who vanished from the snap of his huge purple fingers are gone forever. Even though the gimmick the Russo brothers delved on us in the previous installment, it nonetheless set up a dark and foreboding future for where Marvel will take the next phase of the MCU.

‘Us’

Perhaps not your typical summer flick, but horror movies definitely count, and Jordan Peele’s follow-up to his critical hit Get Out is definitely one we’re excited about. Written and directed by Peele and starring Elisabeth Moss and Lupita Nyong’o, there is virtually no information on the plot of this, apart from being a “social-horror thriller,” a newly labeled genre that has become Peele’s calling card.

‘Dumbo’ (live-action)

Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of one of their animated classics is helmed by Tim Burton, who sadly has been churning out flop after flop. Many are hoping this will finally be the macabre director’s return to form. We’ll have to wait and see, but the magical trailer that dropped definitely has our interest piqued.

‘Aladdin’ (live-action)

Yet another Disney live-action remake. This retelling is helmed by another visually exciting director, Guy Ritchie, which is an unconventional choice, but one that might work considering his adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. There was a lot of worry Aladdin would wind up being white-washed, but luckily the casting of Mena Massoud in the titular role gives us no cause for concern. What might, however, is the casting of Will Smith as the Genie. Then again, trying to recapture the magic of Robin Williams’ take on the role is a tall order.

Men In Black Spin-off

Speaking of Will Smith, who knew there was a Men In Black spin-off in the works? While it might seem a little silly, what has me keeping this one on our radar is the behind-the-scenes talent involved. It’s directed by F. Gary Gray and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson and, best of all, Rebecca Ferguson of the recent Mission: Impossible movies. Time will tell as more gets revealed about this spin-off, but that cast is stacked.

‘Toy Story 4’

Cautious optimism has us excited for the fourth installment of the Pixar classic — especially considering it should’ve remained a trilogy and this fourth entry really shouldn’t even be happening, but it’s fine, I’m not bitter. There’s no word on the plot, or which toys will be involved in the misadventures, but the writer, Josh Cooley, helped pen the script for Inside Out, so that gives me reason to hope Pixar won’t needlessly dilute a perfect trilogy.

‘The Lion King’ (live-action)

This is the one. The third Disney live-action remake on the list, and easily the most anticipated. Talk about a stacked cast: Donald Glover as Simba, Beyonce as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa — I could keep going. And Disney isn’t taking any chances on this one because good faith has been put into the hands of Jon Favreau who directed the widely-acclaimed live-action Jungle Book.

‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

Quentin Tarantino is back, whether you like it or not, with this Hollywood tale surrounding the Manson Family murders. His usual players, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, are returning, and Margot Robbie will take on the role of Sharon Tate. It’s tricky territory, but Tarantino hasn’t been one to shy away from a challenge or controversial material. Fasten your seatbelts, because who honestly knows how this is going to turn out, but it’ll be a wild ride and definitely something to see regardless.

‘Captain Marvel’

Summer blockbuster season starts early once more in 2019 with the March release of Captain Marvel. Surprisingly, DC beat Marvel the punch releasing the first women-led superhero movie with 2017’s Wonder Woman, but they’re caught back up with this highly anticipated entry starring the always charismatic Brie Larson. It’ll be exciting to see the Oscar-winning actress stepping into the role of Carol Danvers, especially with the rest of that cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Lee Pace, Ben Mendelsohn and, best of all, Crazy Rich Asians breakout star Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva.
