Aftermath
Ethan brings Ben and Amy into the hospital. Doctors and nurses swarm, and Ben and Amy are taken to receive treatment. Pam promises Ethan Ben will receive the best care.
Later, Pam brings Theresa in to Ben’s room, where Ethan waits. The doctor says they need to wait for Ben to regain consciousness to determine the extent of his injuries.
Meanwhile, David Pilcher arrives. Pam assures him Amy and Ben will recover. Pilcher considers how they can cover up the explosion, and Pam is worried that people are talking. Pam suggests a town-wide celebration as a distraction.
Meanwhile, members of the resistance, including Harold, meet out in the woods. The truck driver isn’t doing well, but they can’t bring him to the hospital for fear of execution.
Resistance
In jail, Kate dreams about being in a locked ward during her first months in Wayward Pines. She didn’t believe Wayward Pines was a real town. Dr. Jenkins worked with her, and after he left, Pam injected her with drugs.
The next day, townspeople watch downtown being cleaned up. Pilcher listens in on the gossip mill and discourages everyone from spreading rumors. The phone then rings, and Ruby picks up. She informs everyone of a mandatory Fellowship Gathering.
Pilcher, having noticed Ruby pulling pine needles from her hair, returns to the base and looks into her whereabouts the night before. The computer says she was at home, but the video surveillance undermines that.
At the sheriff’s office, Ethan demands to know where Harold is. When Kate won’t talk, Ethan tells her about Ben. Kate is upset by this, but she continues trying to convince Ethan that he’s been brainwashed. She reminds him of his proclivity to follow orders. He says he’s trying to keep people from getting killed. Kate replies that her people want to be free.
Security review
Pilcher believes someone working surveillance is helping the resistance, so Pam offers to conduct a full security review. She interviews surveillance operators while Pilcher watches.
At the hospital, Ben regains consciousness. He asks Theresa to check on Amy, and when Theresa leaves, Megan Fisher walks in. She suggests Ethan didn’t handle the investigation correctly by letting Harold Ballinger go because of Kate. She believes in “clear and severe” punishment, and Ben is going to have to make his own decisions about what he believes — after all, people will want to hear from him as a hero who survived a terrorist attack.
In the woods, the injured resistance member dies. Harold and his partner begin digging a grave but decide to bury him on the other side of the fence. To do so, they steal a dump truck.
Meanwhile, one of Pam’s interviewees, Reggie, admits to blurring or erasing tape for people asking innocent questions. He doesn’t like seeing people being afraid. Pam is upset but understanding.
Fellowship Gathering
The Fellowship Gathering is a carnival. As Ruby tells a co-conspirator that Ted died at the hospital, the mayor takes the stage. Ethan, though, interrupts and tells everyone to go home due to potential danger.
At the hospital, Ben accuses Ethan of letting Harold go for Kate. Theresa realizes Megan is probably behind what Ben’s words. Amy interrupts, though, so Ethan and Theresa leave with a promise to continue the conversation later.
Amy says she wants to be a nurse. She listens to Ben’s heartbeat but sits up with a headache. She’s technically not supposed to be out of bed. Ben’s realized their mortality, and the two sit together comfortably.
At the base, Pam says no one is breaking any rules, and Pilcher knows she’s lying because he watched the interviews.
Following orders
In the waiting room, Theresa worries about Megan Fisher while Ethan sees parallels between this situation and the Easter Bombings. Back then, HQ ordered Ethan to let his suspect go. Three weeks later, over 600 people died. Theresa realizes that the case’s classified nature is what brought Ethan and Kate together.
Ethan assures Theresa he’s not blindly following orders anymore. However, he gets an emergency call from the truck depot so has to leave. Theresa then sees Megan and confronts her about undermining Ben’s trust in them. She tells Megan to stay away from her family.
At the truck depot, the worker shows Ethan that a dump truck is missing. Ethan worries the truck is another bomb.
In prison, Kate remembers meeting with Dr. Jenkins many years later. She told him her nightmares are gone, likely due to acceptance. She got a prescription refill on her way out — but crumpled it up. When Kate comes to, Jenkins/Pilcher is there.
Jenkins/Pilcher says he thought they’d made progress, which Kate intended. Kate reveals she knows who he is and demands the truth. Leaving, Pilcher replies that it’s freedom or safety, not both.
Traitor
Pilcher finds Pam in his office, and she brings him tea. After Pam leaves, Pilcher calls security and they take Reggie. When Pam returns, Pilcher says Reggie is a traitor who needs to be taken care of. Pam is appalled and asks Pilcher to punish her, not one of their volunteers.
Pilcher resolves that there will be no more killings and gathers the volunteers. They watch as Reggie is frozen. New and tighter rules must be applied. He encourages his volunteers to report anything suspicious.
Harold refuses to join his comrade in leaving without Kate, so the truck drives off without him. While patrolling, Ethan sees Harold run off into the woods so follows. He catches Harold and handcuffs him. Harold says Ethan is too late.
The truck plows through the fence. Freedom is short-lived, though, as abbies quickly descend.
