In a new interview with Tom Hiddleston while promoting his latest film, Crimson Peak, the actor reveals why Loki was officially cut from The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Fans have always wondered why Loki’s scene from Age of Ultron was cut from the film, and Joss Whedon even gave an answer that seemed like he just felt it was “too full,” but now we have the official reason from Tom Hiddleston himself thanks to a new interview with Digital Spy.
“I was part of the dream sequence for the character of Thor, and I shot for a day and enjoyed it very much,” he said. “And then I received a phone call from Kevin Feige — Joss e-mailed me — but Kevin said, ‘In test screenings, audiences had overemphasized Loki’s role.’ They thought that since I was in it, I was controlling Ultron. And it was imbalancing people’s expectations so Joss and Kevin were like, ‘let’s cut it.’”
It’s interesting that test audiences were coming away thinking that Loki was controlling Ultron because of how his character had controlled other characters in the first Avengers.
While diehard fans may have been able to tell the difference between a dream sequence and Loki actually controlling Ultron, we imagine an average moviegoer could easily think Loki had a larger hand in everything that was going on.
It’s a shame that Hiddleston’s scene got cut, but the dream sequences were all a bit strange, except for Black Widow’s, which gave us some more information about her past. We can’t imagine having Loki would have added that much to Thor’s dream, but obviously everyone loves to see Loki on the big screen.
Back in May, Joss Whedon released this statement as the reason why Loki was cut. Check out what the director had to say below:
“We did shoot something, but it didn’t play,” Whedon confirmed to MTV. And yes, he was cut because of how busy the film is. “The movie has so much. It’s so filled,” the director continued. “We didn’t want it to feel overstuffed, and I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understood the decision that… there were now too many voices in the chorus. At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing.”
While he does touch on how busy the film was, it seems like Marvel President Kevin Feige may have had the final call. We later found out Whedon was being held on a short leash during the film’s final cut.
Loki is sure to show up in at least one of the future Marvel films, but for now fans can see him in Crimson Peak on October 16.
