The knockout rounds continued tonight, as coaches made some surprising decisions, and we saw the second-to-last steal of the season.
The Knockouts
Cody Wickline vs. Corey Kent White
Blake paired his two young and promising country artists for the night’s first knockout battle: Cody Wickline and Corey Kent White. Corey chose Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” for his knockout song, which hit close to home, as his grandfather is currently fighting for his life. Cody chose “’Til My Last Day” by Justin Moore to show he is a modern country artist with traditional country roots. Cody has been a front-runner from the beginning, but Corey’s emotional performance really set him apart, and Blake chose him as the winner.
Blaze Johnson vs. Deanna Johnson
Adam paired Blaze Johnson and Deanna Johnson because apparently there’s only room on Team Adam for one Johnson. Blake chose The Fray’s “You Found Me,” which showed off his lower register really nicely. Deanna chose a stripped-down version of Roxette’s “Listen To Your Heart,” which was a great way to showcase her unique and distinctive voice. Both artists struggled with nerves, with Adam begging Deanna to gain some confidence. Adam took a surprising chance on Deanna, and chose to wait out her big breakthrough as a part of Team Adam.
Caitlin Caporale vs. Hannah Kirby
Team Pharrell’s Caitlin Caporale and Hannah Kirby were the last pairing of the night. Hannah chose Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” to show some versatility, while Caitlin chose Demi Lovato’s “Warrior” because she related to the song’s message. Hannah needed to work on dynamics, and Pharrell told her to treat her voice like a kite, and consider the song her wind. Both girls gave excellent performances, with Caitlin showing off her powerful vocals, and Hannah’s dancing drawing comparisons to Beetlejuice. Pharrell chose Caitlin, but Blake stole Hannah back onto his team.
The conclusion of The Voice season 8 knockouts airs next Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
