Since the announcement of The Vampire Diaries spinoff tentatively entitled The Originals, more questions than answers have arisen about the new show. Showrunner Julie Plec is finally giving fans more details about the plot, Marcel, and where this leaves Rebekah.
It was originally revealed that the spinoff will begin with the April 25 episode of The Vampire Diaries. The episode will show Klaus returning to the French Quarter of New Orleans where he reunites with his former protégé Marcel. Showrunner Julie Plec, who will also head The Originals, teased more about the episode to Entertainment Weekly. Klaus will be making his way to New Orleans in order to solve a mystery, she reveals. He becomes concerned when he hears that someone is trying to make a move against him but doesn’t know exactly who. When he returns to New Orleans to find out who it is, he becomes reunited with Marcel. Lo and behold, Marcel is now head of the supernatural community down there, having created a set of rules and society for them.
Although it sounds like Marcel will be a huge part of the show, they have yet to cast him. Plec reassures fans that they’re getting ready to begin the process of casting his character in the next few weeks. She can reveal that his character is the life of the party, diabolical, dangerous, and a rock star. Teasing, “If anything, he’s that kind of hard-partying, hard-living vampire who knows how to enjoy the most out of life in the French Quarter.”
“I can hope the answer is yes”
What about the other originals? Plec teases that she’d love to see both Rebekah and Elijah on the spinoff. While she’s not sure where Daniel Gillies stands on joining the show, she gushes, “Oh, in the world of Julie Plec and her obsession with Daniel Gillies, there is always a role for Elijah,” and that, “I can hope the answer is yes.” In speaking about Claire Holt’s future on the shows, Plec explains that Rebekah and Klaus have a lot of healing to do in the upcoming episodes, which could continue on into the new series. Ultimately it comes down to Holt’s decision because Plec feels Rebekah “would be a tremendous asset to both shows.”
If you’re hoping for more teases about Hayley’s involvement on the show, don’t hold your breath. The showrunner kept tight-lipped on the subject, only saying that it will be a nice surprise for fans.
It’s clear that while Plec hopes more of the originals cast will agree to join the spinoff, it’s still very much up in the air for who will sign on. Who would you like to see on The Originals?
