With magic back in Mystic Falls, danger has once again become a factor for the residents in the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries.
Killer Kai
Kai has kidnapped Elena and taken her to the Mystic Grill. He explains that he’s absorbed all the magic that was keeping vampires out of Mystic Falls, but now he has too much magic and is still trying to control it all. Kai brought her to the high school to be his magic dummy and try spells on, and during the experiments she loses her daylight ring. She manages to escape long enough to call Damon, who comes running to her aid.
Damon brings Liv along, who performs a cloaking spell on him so he can find Elena undetected. But then Luke shows up and performs the spell on Liv and himself, saying Liv doesn’t have time for this. Damon calls Alaric, and Jo says that she can perform the cloaking spell but will have to go inside with him. Jeremy comes out with a crossbow hoping to kill Kai instead. They decide it’s better to have Jo go with Damon than have anyone die — yet.
Damon and Jo go to save Elena. They manage to find her, but the spell is seriously draining Jo. So much so, in fact, that they get caught by Kai before they can leave the school. Kai tricks Damon into stabbing Elena with a piece of wood and tries to get Jo to merge with him, but Jeremy shows up with his crossbow and shoots Kai while Alaric stabs him in the neck with something.
They keep Kai on ice at Alaric’s place and decide to wait for the magic from the spell he absorbed to get used up, so that when Jo is finally strong enough they can merge and she’ll win, but Damon doesn’t think Jo is strong enough.
Twin Love
Over at the Salvatore mansion, Jo is practicing her magic. Because after years of having it she’s actually pretty lame at using it. Liv and Alaric are helping her, but they have to keep it a secret from Luke, who ends up finding Liv anyway.
Luke says their dad needs them in Portland, but Liv doesn’t want to go. She realizes that he’s the stronger twin, so if they merge she’ll be the one to die and makes Luke feel bad about the fact. She tells Tyler, and he’s pissed — as Tyler always is. But then Luke shows up and tells them he told their dad they’re out, because he doesn’t want to kill his sister.
So now both twins are on the run form their coven, and agree to help Jo win the battle against Kai.
Art and Blood
Elsewhere, Damon and Caroline are at the hospital with Sheriff Forbes while she’s going through treatments for her cancer. She finds out that there’s an expert on cancer at Duke university, which is where Stefan’s niece is, so he agrees to give her a ride there.
He finds his niece at a freshman art show, but unfortunately he also finds Enzo. He wants to know what secret Stefan was protecting when he killed Monique, and wants to introduced Sarah to Stefan and tell Damon about her. Enzo leaves saying art bores him anyway, but we don’t believe it.
Of course, he’s not that bored. He shows up back at the art show and starts monologuing about plotting revenge against Stefan.
Meanwhile, Caroline visits the doctor at Duke who says that her mom’s doctors are doing everything right and that there’s nothing they can do. But on the plus side, she found someone with almost the exact same cancer as her mom. She goes to visit him, only to realize he doesn’t have any kids or family. So, of course, she decides to feed him vampire blood to see what happens.
She shows Stefan how the guy she fed suddenly feels way, way better, but Stefan doesn’t think it’s what she thinks it is. However, he seems fine so he and Caroline decide to go back to Mystic Falls and tell Sheriff Forbes what happened.
As Caroline is telling her mom about how she “healed” another cancer patient they show us that, in fact, she did not. He wakes up but this time he feels worse than he did before Caroline fed him, and as they show Caroline feeding her mom her blood they switch between that and the other patient coughing up blood and dying.
