While it may be a running joke that The Vampire Diaries characters are still in high school, yet never seem to actually attend class, certain members of the cast are ready to see their characters leave high school behind and move out into the world.
It seems that Paul Wesley is ready to see Stefan graduate high school and put classes behind him. In an interview for EW, Julie Plec talks about how Paul Wesley approached her and asked, “I don’t have to go back to high school, do I?” She responded with “You’re in high school. If you don’t go to high school, what’s the point?” which prompted Wesley to comment, “I look so ridiculous. We all look so ridiculous. We’re 100 years old, we shouldn’t be in high school.”
Well, sorry Paul, it looks like our favorite Mystic Falls students have one more season of high school hijinks to endure before their characters can break free from high school altogether. As Plec puts it, “Well, there’s one more year to go, so suck it up.” I couldn’t have put it better myself.
Season 4 is looking to be a season of transition and change, beginning with Elena’s transformation from human to vampire, and possibly concluding with our favorite characters graduating and looking toward the future. When asked, Julie Plec had this to say about the general themes of Season 4:
But look, what I’ve been saying a lot about this season to the people at the network and in general is that the writers and I are really focusing on that time in your life as your adolescence is coming to an end, that milestone of graduation, and you are making decisions: Do I leave home for good? Do I stay? Can I part with this town that’s been so important to me? Do I part with these people who have been so important to me? Am I going out into the world and starting a life and growing up? Or am I gonna hide here where I’m comfortable even if it’s not the best place for me? There’s a lot of great questions that come along with graduation that our characters — both human and supernatural — are gonna be asking themselves about who they are, who they’re supposed to be, and what they’re supposed to do with their life moving forward.
Whatever they may be looking to focus on post-high school, surely each character will be dealing with the ever-present supernatural issues of life in Mystic Falls. For now, we are happy to see our favorites celebrate all the pomp and circumstance of high school life, hopefully including prom, graduation, friends, and applying to college, all while battling the constant supernatural threats that come with living in a town like Mystic Falls.
Perhaps Nina Dobrev says it best:
But it is gonna be nice. Paul’s right. We’re all growing with the show and we’re becoming adults, and we can only play high school for so long and be believable and also challenged. I think it’s definitely time, and it’ll be a good button for the end of the season and for the next phase of The Vampire Diaries.
