Despite what Alaric might think, the band was back together in The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 19, “Somebody That I Used to Know!”
This episode may be the last one we see jumping back and forth between timelines. The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 19, took us through Bonnie and Enzo’s story over the three missing years, and also showed them racing to save Bonnie’s life in the present day.
This was the biggest Bonnie episode we’ve had in forever! The girl has been waiting a long time to show what she can do, and she definitely brought it. She was somehow funny, badass, adorable and seriously pissed off, all in one episode. It reminded me of how great her character is, and I absolutely loved the small moments that connected her to Caroline and Elena! More female friendship moments in The Vampire Diaries, please!
Bonnie wasn’t the only sidelined character who finally got some spotlight tonight. It was also a big episode for Enzo in both timelines. At least he finally answered the question of where his allegiance lay! I guess he was just aligned with himself the whole time, but I’m willing to bet that has changed now.
The purpose of the bridge backs in this episode were to showcase Bonnie and Enzo falling in love. We saw how he saved her from the Armory when they tried to ambush her in her dorm (loved the Elena Gilbert Easter egg on the door!), and how he kept her in a cabin for three years to keep her safe. It all sounds very Rapunzel to me, but I guess it did the job because the Armory still hasn’t found her after all this time.
The New Year’s Eve scene was definitely cute, but the whole thing wasn’t even close to enough for me. In The Vampire Diaries we’re used to slow-burn romances and romantic tension growing between characters for seasons until we can’t stand it anymore! This was absolutely the opposite of that. After just a few cute and funny comments and one steamy make out, I guess we’re all supposed to be on board the Bonenzo ship now.
Even the Steroline relationship, which is made up of two characters that are fairly universally loved, took years for people to warm up to. Bonnie is awesome, and obviously central to the show, but the same certainly can’t be said about Enzo. If anything, he is quite widely disliked. I wish we had gotten more time to see Bonnie fall in love with him, so maybe fans could fall in love with him alongside her.
Though the past scenes were rushed, the Bonenzo relationship was much better in the present day timeline. Nothing overly significant happened between them (besides Bonnie dropping the L bomb), but it was great to see that Bonnie could use him as a sounding board and a confidante. It is obvious that she is really happy with him, whether or not I can understand why quite yet. Even that New Year’s Eve dinner must have been a huge shock to her since the last person she dated was a teenage Jeremy Gilbert. She’s not used to being treated right!
Enzo was supportive, for sure, but it really didn’t seem like he was that upset about her dying. In comparison to Damon, his pursuit of Rayna’s victims completely lacked passion and haste. Whether or not you agree with all of Damon’s methods (sorry, Beau), he seemed much more intent on keeping Bonnie alive than Enzo did! Enzo was just a little too calm about the whole situation.
When Damon wasn’t busy tearing off heads, he was trying his best to win Bonnie’s friendship back. This girl is still not budging, though, and she even gave his unopened letter back. Maybe if he brought her favorite flowers or knew her drink order things would be different!
Damon’s fight with Enzo would lead us to believe that he is angry with him for giving Bonnie the pills. That is true, but there’s probably more to it. Enzo summed it up perfectly when he said, “I made a mistake, you made a choice.” In Damon’s mind, he and Enzo both screwed up, but he is the only one paying the price for it. He doesn’t understand why Bonnie still loves Enzo even though he basically killed her, but she hates Damon for leaving her.
It’s difficult to argue that Damon was feeling anything other than jealousy when he looked at Bonnie and Enzo. His relationship with Enzo has been a rocky one, but that’s not reason enough for him to be so disturbed by Bonnie and Enzo together. If Bonnie was truly his best friend, he should feel at least somewhat happy that she has found someone who loves her.
By far the best part of The Vampire Diaries season 7, episode 19, was everyone having some good old vampire killing fun together. The montage of Bonnie, Clyde and Clyde working together and Stefan and Alaric as a team was so fun! I really hope we get more of this next week with Caroline involved as well. They still have a lot of vampires to kill, so they’d better get hunting.
On the Stefan and Alaric side of things, I loved how sassy Stefan got with Alaric. He obviously hurt Caroline a lot, so it’s great to see him fight for her now. It’s interesting that both Salvatore brothers find themselves trying to win back a girl they’ve wronged. I sense some brother bonding coming along.
I’ve never been more against the Caroline and Alaric relationship than when I saw “Justice of the Peace” written in Alaric’s journal. Caroline Forbes deserves the best and most elaborate wedding that Salvatore money and compulsion can provide! Couldn’t he have at least written a heart or a smiley face in the calendar? Don’t worry, Steroline fans, this whole “older man” phase that Caroline’s going through will be over before we know it, and she’ll be back in the arms of a much, much older man.
