Last night The Vampire Diaries not only took us to the future and kept us informed of what’s happening today, but we also got several flashbacks into our characters’ past.
Now that The Vampire Diaries has started to do flash-forward storytelling we thought that the days of flashbacks were over, but we were wrong! Honestly we were silly to think that a show grounded in flashbacks to the past would cease doing them on their seventh season, and we’re kind of happy we got to see a “young” Stefan again.
The past
In the flashbacks we saw Stefan’s first true love: No other than heretic vampire Valerie. Apparently Valerie and the rest of the heretics were looked after by Lily way before they became vampires and were instead witches. In those days Stefan was just a young lad, 6 years after he thought his mother died.
Lily had requested that her heretics go and check up on Stefan and Damon so she knew how they were fairing, and they all reported that they were living happily without their mother. But the truth was far from that – Stefan was still thinking about his mother every day, and Damon had enlisted in the civil war.
Valerie had fallen in love and managed to get in bed with the Salvatore, and it seemed that she fell for Stefan as hard as he had fallen for her. However fate was not as it seemed, and she was forced to leave and go back to London by Julian, a vampire that had come with her to Mystic Falls to ensure Lily’s heretics did as they were told.
We also discovered through these flashbacks how Valerie had actually become the first witch ever to become a vampire, which then turned her into a magic wielding heretic. Who do we have to think for this? The big baddie of the season: Julian!
Yes, we have another big baddie. Julian seems to be the daddy bear to Lily and her heretic cubs and while we don’t know why he ditched Lily in the present just yet we do know that he beat a pregnant Valerie almost to death so that she wouldn’t give birth to Stefan’s baby. And this is likely what caused her to seek suicide as her solution on that boat ride back to London. Little did she know that as soon as she died she’d wake up a heretic vampire.
Yes, The Vampire Diaries is really that insane.
The present
In the present day Caroline and Stefan managed to warm Lily’s heart enough to allow her to let Caroline leave her house, no long a prisoner. They’d made it abundantly clear just how much Stefan had loved her in the past and somehow Lily’s heart grew three sizes that day and she let Caroline go.
But not everyone had a successful day this week. Damon convinced Alaric and Bonnie to go to Myrtle Beach to find Oscar, the sixth heretic, so that he could supposedly syphon away Bonnie’s horrible magic visions. When Oscar tries he then realizes that Bonnie was in possession of the phoenix stone, which made Bonnie realize that Alaric lied the entire time and hadn’t actually destroyed said stone.
Somehow in a hot mess of vampire/heretic fights and drama Alaric convinced Bonnie to let him try and resurrect Jo using the stone, and Damon was able to capture Oscar to use as leverage against Lily. But things don’t end there, folks. Valerie was able to locate Oscar, who claims that he found Julian several weeks ago but didn’t want to go back to Lily’s order. Unable to let this slide Valerie went ahead and killed Oscar herself, completely destroying Damon’s leverage against Lily for next week.
The future
And last but not least we must talk about the 30 second glimpse we got into the future because, as with every episode, these 30 seconds bring us more questions than the rest of the episode combined.
This week in the future we see Stefan call Tyler Lockwood to convince Caroline that she needs to be worried about this mystery vampire hunting woman. In this flash-forward Tyler is driving a nice car and is wearing a nice suit, which matches Caroline’s nice outfit and fancy job. All of this makes us wonder: Is Tyler Caroline’s fiancé?!
This week was filled with crazy antics through-out history, and we’re genuinely curious how Damon is going to fare next week without a living heretic to bargain with.
