Probably the most informative roundtables you’ll get from Comic-Con, learn more about The Originals and what they have in store for their first season. We got all sort of juicy info about Haley, Marcel, and the show!
The pregnancy, the romance, and the werewolves.
The one thing that’s on all our minds we had to ask: How long will this pregnancy last?! We got to ask the show runner Julie Plec, and she didn’t even give us the slip!
We asked her if Haley’s pregnancy would last just a couple episodes or a whole season, and she said “Definitely longer than a couple episodes. Right now we’ve been ordered for thirteen, and we definitely go at a snail’s pace of a timeline. Episodes end and then start again two hours later, so I hope that if we continue past thirteen then the pregnancy will continue past thirteen episodes. Otherwise it’ll be like the fastest growing fetus in the history of time, and we don’t wanna do the whole ‘wolves grow x times faster’, or we hope not to. Season 1 will see a lot of the pregnancy and what the baby will mean to every single character.”
One thing was absolutely clear when Plec talked about The Originals, and that was it will not be about the love triangles but about family.
“The tone of The Originals is much more cemented in the power of family and redemption. The Vampire Diaries was two brothers who have been sort of estranged but the love for the same woman brings them back. And this is about how one brother is saying ‘my family has been so fractured for so long, and now there’s a hope of this child and maybe it’ll put the family back together’ but it’s not going to be easy or fun, and it’s actually going to be very very hard. But it’s more about the family unit.”
And as fans of The Vampire Diaries, we had to find out whether or not The Originals was going to go the same route of love triangles and relationships, but luckily Plec admits that is not what the show will be about.
“With The Vampire Diaries the premise of the series is a love triangle. With The Originals, the premise is family. And the love triangles such as those will be born organically out of the characters and the chemistry between actors. We definitely have hardcore awesome romance that we launch into right away, but we didn’t want to creative the love triangle as a series premise and shove it down your throat. We want to let the audience, and us as story tellers, discover it along the way.”
Plec even had a lot to say about the werewolf pregnancy! Here’s an interesting fact for you: “When werewolves are pregnant they don’t transform during their full moon. The idea is that’s the one time of the month that they’re actually free from this curse. So Haley will enjoy nine months of not having to be a werewolf, which I think will give her great perspective as she tries to find herself.”
Haley, Elijah, and Klaus’s conquest
We also spoke to Phoebe Tonkin, who plays Haley on the show, and asked her about her character.
When asked about starting Haley off on a whole new show, she states “I just spoke to Julie about it and said I was excited for the challenge. I don’t think Haley’s had a chance to have her side of the story seen. There’s so much backstory for Haley in particular. I’ve never had a character that has had so many things happened and it’s driven her to where she is right now. It’s going to be a lot of fun to try to persuade people who watch TVD who don’t empathize with Haley to go into the season and then root for her.”
We’re absolutely excited to see Haley kick some ass in The Originals as well, and we had to find out: Will Haley be taking the back seat to the action now that she’s pregnant?
Tonkin doesn’t want her to! “I hope not. No, actually definitely not. I mean they’re all vampires and have powers and I don’t know if a baby bump is going to stop them.”
One of the other things we were most curious about was how Elijah was going to take his brother’s battle for being king. Will he be the honorable man we’ve known him to be or will he stoop down to Klaus’s level? Daniel Guilles himself reflected on the subject.
“I think Elijah will always try to go the high road, but he’s not that noble and he’s not that honorable. I think people started saying that about him in season 3, but he’s not really! He took a bunch of change and threw it at a cafe full of innocent people. He beheaded a vampire who was apologizing to him on his knees. He made a vampire drive a stake through his own heart. He’s not that noble, he’s just more noble that Klaus…which isn’t that different.”
And last but certainly not least, we got a chance to chat with Joseph Morgan, who plays Klaus. The first thing we had to ask was: If Klaus had to pick, would he pick his family and his child over his supremacy in New Orleans?
“If we take it from the moment we left off in the backdoor pilot, I think Klaus is absolutely more concerned about becoming king, about something that will make him more powerful. He is really a hundred percent behind that, but I don’t know what’s going to happen with the child. I think that…I would hope he would get behind the idea a little more. There’s something so appealing to me about playing a monster that has this tiny little baby…and I think it’s really exciting, but right now he’s all about the throne.”
He then divulged a lot more about Klaus’s relationship with Marcel. “Even in what I’ve read so far, my suspicions about [Klaus and Marcel’s relationship] is that he’s a little torn. Because Marcel meant a lot to Klaus back in the day, and in fact you can draw a parallel to the relationship he had with Stefan in Chicago. While Stefan was more of a brother, and Marcel in a way, I think, started as more of a son to Klaus. He’s absolutely torn, but absolutely insulted in the way Marcel thinks he can run things. He’s very needy, Klaus. He needs to be paid the right respect, the respect he feels he’s due.”
