The Legend of Korra continuation comic, Turf Wars, has a new artist and a long-awaited release date!
The Legend of Korra comic was originally revealed by co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartnio at San Diego Comic-Con 2015. But news on the highly-anticipated project has stalled since the initial announcement, leaving fans hungry for more information on the future of the Avatar world.
But the wait is finally over! Entertainment Weekly revealed today that part one of the comic, titled “Turf Wars,” will be released in June 2017.
As initially planned, the comic will be written by Michael Dante DiMartino. Bryan Konietzko will contribute “nuggets of the stories” and art consultation. However, artist Irene Koh has now replaced Hellcat‘s Brittney Williams as the illustrator on the The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars.
(Just saying, Koh is a great last name for someone working in the Avatar-verse.)
“Turf Wars” picks up soon after the final moments of The Legend of Korra, when Korra and Asami took much-needed vacation through the Spirit Portal. (Like in a couple-way!)
But their return to Republic City will be anything but relaxing. Korra and Asami will find “political hijinks and human vs. spirit conflict,” says Dark Horse Comics. “A pompous developer plans to turn the new spirit portal into an amusement park, potentially severing an already tumultuous connection with the spirits.”
“In addition, the triads have realigned and are in a brutal brawl at the city’s borders where hundreds of evacuees have relocated. In order to get through it all, Korra and Asami vow to look out for each other — but first, they’ve got to get better at being a team.”
At last year’s SDCC, DiMartino also teased that Turf Wars will focus on Korra and Asami’s relationship. It seems that the romantic element of the story will be just as critical as the politics of shifting populations, industrialism, and gang violence.
Sounds like a heavy load for Korra. But it’s all in a day’s work for the Avatar, right?
The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars will be released by Dark Horse Comics in June 2017.
