Sheldon and Howard took important emotional steps against a backdrop of Star Trek and construction on The Big Bang Theory 9×07.
The Vulcan way
In “The Spock Resonance,” Sheldon has to confront his human side while trying to emulate Star Trek‘s Doctor Spock. Wil Wheaton arranges for Sheldon to be interviewed by Adam Nimoy for a documentary about his father, and which leads to the revelation that Sheldon had intended to propose to Amy.
Much like the audience at last season’s finale, Leonard and Penny are completely flabbergasted by this news. But Sheldon insists that he has no emotional response to the breakup – he is pure Vulcan, following the logical mantra “What would Spock do?”
Of course, Sheldon’s Amy-obsessive behavior has already proven this false, as has his despair over his own emotional state in previous episodes this season. But whether he is motivated by the renewed memory of Spock or a desire to detach from painful experiences, Sheldon finally gets deeply upset by Penny and Leonard’s insistence that he has emotions, and flees the interview.
When he recovers, Sheldon makes a decision. He goes to propose to Amy – if she says no, he will know that their relationship is finally over.
It turns out that nobody has to tell Sheldon that proposing out-of-the-blue to the woman who broke up with you is deeply problematic and a terrible idea. At Amy’s apartment, he finds her exchanging a goodnight kiss with a date – and the sight sends him fleeing back home.
This is a good thing, Sheldon. Trust us.
Mother may I?
Meanwhile, Bernadette is tired of living Mrs. Wolowitz’s unchanged house. Howard is massively averse to any sort of change – except one, stay tuned – so he reluctantly agrees to let her redecorate just the dining room.
Bernadette immediately calls in her dad to help make a plan for construction. Much to Howard’s dismay, he and Mr. Rostenkowski have to crawl beneath the house to investigate a support wall — during which adventure, his father-in-law states his disapproval that Howard does not want children.
This is, of course, not true — it’s Bernadette who doesn’t want kids, and she’s lied to her dad to keep the secret.
Of course, Bernadette’s father is a big part of why she doesn’t want kids. She never wants to become the exhausted, overworked woman her mother was; and let’s face it, Howard is no great help around the house.
Earnestly, Howard promises Bernadette that he will be more helpful if they have children. When his father left, he promised himself that he would be a present and dedicated father to his own children.
Hey Howard, maybe start acting like a present and dedicated husband? Just a thought.
In any case, Bernadette agrees to reconsider her position on having a baby — leaving the audience primed for a big announcement in the near-ish future.
