Supernatural‘s cast and executive producers teased season 11 in the Comic-Con press room.
Supernatural season 10 ended with Dean killing Death to save Sam. Moments later, he found himself cured of the Mark of Cain via Rowena’s magic. Losing the Mark, however, unleashed a pre-biblical evil known as The Darkness. Season 11, then, will focus on the brothers looking to stop this force that God and his archangels battled before life itself existed.
So, what can we expect come October?
The Darkness
Says EP Andrew Dabb, “The nice thing about something as big as the Darkness is that it creates a really big ripple effect. And so you’re going to see how it impacts both our guys and the world of hunting. We’re also going to see how it impacts Heaven and Hell and monsters and demons and witches and everything else. And everyone is going to come together.”
He adds, “Now, some people are going to see it as an advantage. Some people are going to want to fight it. We’re going to make allies where maybe we haven’t made allies in the past.”
The brothers’ dynamic
With the Mark of Cain gone and a bigger threat than they’ve perhaps ever faced, the Winchester brothers will be united to fight the Darkness. Mostly. Dabb teases “twists and turns in the road” and “differences in opinion” between Sam and Dean. “Again, that’s what makes Supernatural so fun, that the boys will come at problems from different angles.”
Stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles echo this sentiment. Padalecki says that “because the Darkness is so vast and seemingly insurmountable, the brothers are side-by-side [and] teamed up again. Which, for me, is badass. I love that part of Supernatural, when the brothers kind of team up and they roll and they sacrifice and they’re together.”
“I feel like it’s going to be a much more brother-centric kind of show this year,” Ackles adds.

Sam in season 11
Interestingly, Sam’s psychic powers from earlier seasons may be making a return in season 11. Padalecki previews that in episode 2, Sam “starts to have visions or dreams of a higher power. He’s also having memories that maybe weren’t memories. Sam believes there’s a higher power trying to contact him to tell him how to solve this problem.
“So it’s going to be really cool because we’re going to see a few characters via visions that we haven’t seen in Supernatural in a long time.”
Dean in season 11
As for Dean’s mindset in season 11, Ackles says, “I think that the pity party is over with Dean. I’m sick of playing it, I think they’re sick of writing it. The Mark is gone, great, now I’m back to normal and I can fight whatever that means. Whatever mess we made, then, it’s our job to clean it up. I’m not going to feel guilty about it though because it’s the whole ‘sometimes you’ve got to do a little bad for the greater good,’ and I think Dean has come to terms with what he’s done. He wore that monkey on his back and now he’s done with it.
“And I think that getting back to the original format of the show and how that journey began was the two brothers with a common goal, band together, this is where the road is going to take them. I think that’s where we find ourselves this year. I’m happy about that.”
Episode 4
At the Supernatural panel, Dabb teased that episode 4 would be one of the fun ones of the season. In the press room, Padalecki previews that “all takes place in the car. It’s called ‘Baby’. We’re going to see kind of like an episode of Supernatural, not [from] the point of view [of the car entirely] because we’ll see the car as well, but we’ll see things where the camera is inside of the car and one of the brothers runs in to grab something and off-camera you hear some stuff and he runs back in and he’s bloody.
“We forget sometimes that the Impala is always with us. So you kind of see how Baby views an episode of Supernatural.”
Supernatural season 11 premieres Wednesday, October 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
