During a new interview, Star Wars director George Lucas continues to defend the fact that Han Solo did not shoot first at Greedo, despite the film’s original cut showing just that.
It’s been long debated by fans whether Greedo shot at Han Solo first or not, and despite the original film “clearly” showing Han Solo shooting first according to fans, George Lucas would later go on to re-edit the film once it was released for home viewing which shows Greedo shooting first.
While speaking with the Washington Post, Lucas says Han shooting first in the Mos Eisley cantina would have made him a cold-blooded killer. Lucas says, “Han Solo was going to marry Leia, and you look back and say, ‘Should he be a cold-blooded killer?'”
He continues, “Because I was thinking mythologically — should he be a cowboy, should he be John Wayne? And I said, ‘Yeah, he should be John Wayne.’ And when you’re John Wayne, you don’t shoot people [first] — you let them have the first shot. It’s a mythological reality that we hope our society pays attention to.”

It’s interesting that he continues to debate the change in the film’s cut, but says he has “assiduously avoided the Internet since 2000 — no Facebook, no Twitter, no e-mail even.” Which means he probably doesn’t know just how enraged fans are about his decision to alter the film after its release to make Han shoot second.
When Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams was asked whether Han Solo shot first the director said, “Hell Yes.” So, we’ll all just have to agree that everyone has a differing opinion about the 1977 film. Abrams is in charge now, so we look forward to controversies that arise when The Force Awakens hits theaters next month.
