So apparently The Settlers of Catan is being developed for the big and small screen. What’s next, Monopoly: The Movie?
We’re not sure how to feel about this story. We’re nerds, so obviously we love the long-winded, overly complicated The Settlers of Catan (with three expansions at once, thank you very much). But a movie version?
Variety reports that producer Gail Katz has picked up both film and television rights to Klaus Teber’s popular franchise.
The Settlers of Catan, for the uninitiated, is a board game series which sees you fight for dominance over a landmass, with limited resources and outside forces attacking the board. It is not affiliated with the video game series The Settlers.
“The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today,” Katz says in a statement.
“I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.”
Of course the problem with these adaptations is often that cinemagoers (or TV watchers) don’t come for the setting, they come for the characters — of which there are none in the Catan franchise.
But hey, they made Battleship into a film. We really should have seen this coming.
Note: There actually already is a book series set in the Catan world — maybe Katz will look to that for inspiration.
