Castle 5×18 “The Wild Rover” just finished airing. Death by chocolate cake batter and backstory on detective Ryan made this episode awesome!
Rick and Beckett investigate a murder at a bakery while Ryan heads to the doctor with his wife to find out why they can’t conceive. The team discovers rather quickly that the baker may have been involved with the Irish mob.
Ryan arrives at the police station to be kissed by a suspect in the murder who promptly slaps him when she finds out he is a cop. Ryan seems to definitely have gotten himself into it this time. The reactions of his co-workers are priceless. It is clear that while undercover Ryan had a relationship with Siobhan and he realizes that in order to help her he will need to go back to undercover which does not go over well with his wife.
While Ryan heads back to Staten Island Rick and Beckett work on building a case against Bobby S. Along with Esposito they work on the murder of the baker. Meanwhile Ryan becomes Fenton and enters into the Irish mob once again. He quickly makes an enemy in Liam who distrusts Ryan primarily because the boss likes him.
Beckett, Esposito and Rick discover that Ryan has walked into the middle of a hostile takeover. Bobby S was clearly set up most likely by Liam who is already suspicious of Ryan. The showdown at the end sees Ryan facing off with Liam and Bobby in order to protect Siobhan who has been outed as an informant. We loved this scene! Especially when Ryan is introducing his team and calls on Rick who says, “seriously, I didn’t bring my vest.”
This Ryan-centric episode was fantastic! We really need more focus on Ryan and Esposito, their characters have so much to offer and the actors are fantastic when given more of the spotlight. I think Laine needs the backstory treatment!
Next week is Castle’s 100th episode! Here is the synopsis for 5×19 “The Lives of Others”:
Castle finds himself in the unfortunate position of NOT being able to work a case. While he’s holed up in the loft with a broken leg, Beckett goes off to investigate the death of an IRS agent without him, leaving Castle miserable and bored. But when he thinks he witnesses the murder of a young woman in the apartment across the street, he is thrown into a “Rear Window”-esque murder mystery that hits much too close to home.
