The Doctor Who Christmas Special is always a big fan draw. This year we have some things we are really hoping for.
Do you remember the last time we had a brand new Doctor Who episode? If you don’t, there’s a reason for that. The last time we saw Doctor Who was Christmas 2015, when “The Husbands of River Song” aired. It’s been a long wait.
The BBC recently released the synopsis for the Doctor Who Christmas Special. It reads:
“With brain-swapping aliens poised to attack, the Doctor and Nardole link up with an investigative reporter and a mysterious figure known only as The Ghost. Can the Doctor save Manhattan? And what will be revealed when we see behind the mask?”
Given the synopsis and our Doctor Who drought, there are a couple of things we are really hoping for with the 2016 Doctor Who Christmas Special.
‘Doctor Who’ 2016 Christmas Special Wishlist
Make it fun
Doctor Who is a show that lends itself to zaniness. We really could use a dose of just plain old wacky fun. It can even be completely improbable. We don’t care. “Improbable” is often Doctor Who’s middle name.
Give us space elves, attack mistletoe, alien reindeer. We want festive fun. Nardole is a great start, but we want more!
Royalty please
Whovians love a good old poke at the Queen, or other members of the Royal household. It doesn’t have to be a drawn out bit. We can have a passing reference. Put in something about Wills and Kate, poke fun at Charles, or give a plug to Harry. We love it. It’s the stuff that gifs are made of.
Our personal favorite was the time the Titanic was crash landing at Buckingham Palace, and the Queen had to run out of the way.
Not too American
We don’t mind occasional trips stateside, but Doctor Who needs to stay British. Aside from the fact that it’s a British institution, there’s the fact that British actors trying to do American accents is just generally weird to American ears. They manage to sound like they are from everywhere and nowhere.
This time out there is definitely an American superhero riff going on. We are crossing our fingers the accents aren’t bad. The last time we had a show set in New York the accents were terrible. We don’t “Awll tawk like dis.” Hopefully, we don’t have an episode full of people who sound like Fran Drescher. We’re not saying that no one talks like that, it’s just that everyone doesn’t talk like that.
Not too angsty
We’ve had enough time to weep for Clara, and Danny, and River. At this point we want a Doctor who isn’t wallowing, or too introspective. We just need the guy who frankly gets stuff done because he’s brilliant, and quirky, and loveable. While we are at it, keeping the anger at a minimum would be a good idea too.
Give us a taste next season
This is the last hurrah for showrunner Steven Moffat. We don’t yet have an air date for Doctor Who season 10, but mid-spring is likely. After that, Chris Chibnall of Broadchurch fame takes over.
All we know about series 10 so far is that we have a new companion named Bill, and that the Daleks are back. When did we learn this information? The answer is back on April 26, 2016. We could use a little more info. We need something to tide us over until season 10 actually starts.
The Doctor Who Christmas Special is on BBC America Christmas Day at 9:00/8:00.
