Orphan Black season 4, episode 2 “Transgressive Border Crossing” was one that brought bad news to almost all of our favorite characters.
The thing I loved about Orphan Black season 1 was the cliffhangers — every episode had a cliffhanger that was just intriguing enough to make me want more but not outrageous enough to make me hate it. Seasons 2 and 3 were pretty decent in comparison but the endings just didn’t get me the way they did in season 1.
But season 4 is bringing back the epic episodic cliffhangers that season 1 had, and I love it!
Worms in creepy places
In “Transgressive Border Crossing,” we end with the realization that Sarah has one of those creepy worms embedded in her cheek. I knew ever since they brought up this whole worm plot that this was a possibility because of the dreams Sarah had of people messing around with her mouth, but to actually seen it a proven theory was a little jarring.
If Sarah has a worm in her mouth, does that mean the rest of the clones have this? I’m not positive that they do because the two surgeons responsible for killing the men with the worms in their mouths earlier in the season were able to identify Sarah simply by feeling the inside of her cheek — that must mean that MK, who they thought they were approaching, doesn’t have a worm in her cheek. In turn that must mean that none of the other clones have worms in their cheeks, but we have to wait until next week to figure that out.
I guess the real question at this point in time is how did the killers find MK? She’s so careful and is insanely paranoid about keeping her digital footprint hidden, so finding her must have been difficult. I’m very curious about this because if it means Neolution has figured out that MK is alive, I think that means a whole other set of problems for our other clone friends.
Cosima’s science problems
Things with Cosima are concerning, as we haven’t really had an update on her health ever since Rachel destroyed the bone marrow that was to be given to her. In this episode we’ve found out that Cosima is weaker, something that had to be told to us rather than shown because to me she actually looked fine — but I guess the gene therapy isn’t working so far.
I’m concerned for her, guys. We finally have the source material from the original, Kendall, but then tonight we also found out that Kendall has leukemia. I might be a horrible person because of this, but when I found that out I wasn’t inherently worried about Kendall’s survival but rather what Kendall’s decline in health would mean for Cosima’s gene therapy. If she dies does that lessen the chances of Cosima being able to get better? I really hope not! But of course, I’m pretty sure you can’t draw blood from a dead person, so…
And we also need to figure out, for Cosima’s — and our — sanity, whether Delphine is alive. So far everything is pointing towards alive but not well. When Mrs. S. asks about “any news about Delphine” Scot responds with a firm no. You’d only ask if there was news about someone if they were alive and not doing well, or disappearing entirely. If they show had wanted to off Delphine then we’d have proof of her death by now because this is just stringing along fans. If Delphine isn’t alive, then I’m going to be very concerned by what the creators are going to face on Twitter and Tumblr when the Cophine shippers find out.
Twins! Twins! Twins!
I think one of the most exciting (and happy) revelations of this episode was when we found out that Helena was going to have twins. It’s so full circle! Of course it would happen to Helena, that after being a twin herself she would get pregnant with two. And all this is happening while she is staying with Alison and Donnie, which is definitely the best place for her right now.
It’s so great seeing Helena live in such a normal environment, away from the shooting and drama and kidnapping that she was so used to. The juxtaposition between the clone that was once trained to kill and the clone that’s happiest when she’s being a housewife is so integral to the success of this episode, and I look forward to what that juxtaposition does for the rest of the season.
Alison is clearly happy about Helena’s health and ability to have babies, but there’s an obvious jealousy there noted when she calls her “fertile Myrtle.” Of course she’s jealous – the infertility she and most of her clone sisters are born with is something that’s hard to handle, and she felt the need to have children so strongly that she adopted not one but two kids. Alison loves being a mother and it kills me she can’t biologically be one, so it makes sense that when she’s confronted with this news she’s upset about it. Helena’s pregnancy is going to be a test for her, to see if she really can be happy for Helena without her jealousy getting in the way, and for some reason I think that test is going to be a lot harder for Alison than we think.
Felix, oh Felix
Felix is always a character that has broken my heart. Ever since season 1, Felix is constantly in the background and barely involved in the clone drama. And it’s no fault of his own — he just happens to be involved in something that’s so very not about him, and it’s got to be hurtful to not ever really be the center of attention after all of this started.
Even Felix’s romantic life has been hit or miss, with the first and only real relationship fizzling out with no real detailed explanation. I loved Felix and the morgue attendant, and I’m sad that we didn’t really get a chance to explore that more. His strongest relationship at this point is with Alison, and that’s made even more clear when Alison visits Felix and talks to him about things he can’t even tell Sarah yet.
I fully support his decision to try and find his birth parents — his family history is something that’s always been on my mind. If Sarah is related to Mrs. S., how and when did Felix get into the equation? I’m really happy that Felix is in search of those answers this season because he definitely needs some time to himself, and I don’t blame him for feeling disconnected to Sarah or the rest of the clones. Hopefully this all means we’ll get more of him this seasons.
