’90s Nick fans rejoice! Nickelodeon says they are preparing to revive several classic cartoons now that the kids who grew up on them have children of their own.
Speaking to Variety this week, Nickelodeon’s President of Content and Development, Russell Hicks, revealed that the cartoon network is actively working on ways to bring back everyone’s favorite shows.
While Hicks declined to share what specific shows they’re reviving, he did say they’re bringing back the characters fans have been clamoring for.
“We are looking at our library to bring back ideas, shows that were loved, in a fresh new way,” he told Variety. “We are getting ready to bring back some of the ones [fans] told us multiple times they want to have brought back.”
The report says the shows may not specifically come back as series, but “could appear in other formats, like a movie or special.”
If Rugrats (one of Nick’s most popular shows) receives a revival, it won’t be its first. You may remember that Nick launched a spinoff called All Grown Up which launched in 2003 and ran for 5 seasons.
Those who watched Nick in the ’90s know that there are a ton of great shows from the network to choose from. For this writer, the shows that come to mind first are Rugrats, Wild Thornberries, Hey Arnold!, and Doug. If I consider live-action shows, the list grows longer: Clarissa Explains It All and All That are two shows that I loved watching as a kid.
It sounds like Nick is hoping for new generations of parents to introduce their children to the revivals.
Surely young adults — whether or not they have kids — will give the new versions a try because nostalgia.
Which classic Nickelodeon shows would you watch?
While many of Nick’s biggest hits are now off air, several old cartoons are still running: The Fairly OddParents was recently renewed for a 10th season, and the team behind SpongeBob SquarePants is currently developing a 10th run for the sponge and his underwater friends. Oh, and a SpongeBob Broadway musical is now in the works.
