Shrek’s fairytale world is poised to make a comeback, according to new comments from the head of NBC Universal.
Although Shrek’s story came to an “end” in 2010’s Shrek Forever After, the everlasting need to continue churning out hits in Hollywood means the ogre is (inevitably) making a comeback.
The reveal came during a new interview with Deadline, during which NBCU’s Steve Burke said he tasked Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Minions, Ice Age), with bringing Shrek and his friends back to life. “[Chris Meledandri, Illumination founder and CEO] is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises,” Burke said.
In addition to the films in the core Shrek series, Dreamworks released a spinoff in 2011, Puss in Boots, starring the franchise’s beloved feline voiced by Antonio Banderas.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about Shrek making a return — in 2014 Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzeberg hinted that the green guy would be making a return after an extended resting period. At this point it seems like they’re ready to bring him back, but first they need to make sure they have a solid story in place.
The Shrek films were loved by many, including this writer, when they opened in theaters between 2001 and 2010. They also spawned additional revenue streams for Dreamworks like theme park attractions and a musical.
