The Mummy may star Tom Cruise, but Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll appears to be at the center of this shared monster universe.
The teaser for this trailer reads, “In The Mummy, opening June 9, Russell Crowe plays Dr. Jekyll, who runs Prodigium, a society dedicated to fighting monsters. But is that Mr. Hyde we spot?”
Crowe’s Jekyll has taken on the task of exploring this world of monsters and defeating evil wherever he can. But as we all know from the stories of old, Jekyll has his own secrets in the form of Mr. Hyde.
We catch a glimpse of him in the trailer, which makes the line, “It takes a monster to defeat a monster,” all the more appropriate.
The Mummy is just the beginning of what will certainly be quite a colossal undertaking, as Universal Studios is looking to make films for the Invisible Man, Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Bride of Frankenstein.
The idea is that all of these movies will eventually crossover, and it seems likely that Dr. Jekyll will play an important role in each.
