EW has released these beautiful images, that show the progression (or lack of) of our core four characters’ wardrobes in this new and darker year of Merlin.
After a two-year time jump, the characters are settling into their new roles; most significantly, Guinevere is now Queen of Camelot, and this is of course reflected in her wardrobe choices. Her red gown is stunning, as is her royal blue.
Costume designer Jane Spicer comments on this development, saying, “This is Gwen’s new, regal look, which we can expect for most of this series. She’s got big sleeves, trains, jewelry, crowns and petticoats.” Angel Coulby has taken to this change very well seeming to, “love her new wardrobe, and so far has managed it very, very well indeed.”
Merlin, by contrast, hasn’t changed a bit. While that of course shouldn’t be surprising (it wasn’t like he was promoted to court magician last season or anything… though hopefully that’s not far off now!), it is not just a choice based on plot developments. “Merlin is really an iconic character,” Spicer says, as reason for why his costume never changes significantly.
Arthur has not changed much this year either of course, having always been the Prince (and now King) of Camelot. But Spicer none the less previews subtle changes, such as when he is alone with his wife. “When he is in his private chamber with Gwen, he might be much more casually dressed,” she says, in “just a linen shirt and trousers.”
Finally there is Morgana, who seems to have gone beyond the Wall this season. Spicer won’t give anything away about what exactly Morgana is doing in wildling territory, but she does say, “Morgana’s fur coat here is supposed to be made from one of the wolves that pull her sleigh.” So… our Game of Thrones jokes maybe weren’t that far off after all!
The first episode of Merlin‘s fifth season, “Arthur’s Bane,” airs this Saturday at 7:45 on BBC One!
