The Ice Warriors are making a comeback this year on Doctor Who. The imagery for the 2013 version has just been revealed.
Just like the Daleks, Cybermen, and Sontarans, the Ice Warriors are classic Doctor Who foes making a comeback in the reboot era. They are going to make their debut in a Mark Gatiss-penned episode directed by Douglas Mackinnon. It will be the third episode to air after the series returns on March 30.
The Ice Warriors first popped up back in 1967 in the Patrick Troughton years. Unfortunately some of their footage was destroyed in the infamous BBC cleaning spree. Nonetheless, the audiofiles of those episodes remain and according to The Radio Times, “Classic Doctor Who adventure The Ice Warriors will be released on DVD this summer with animated versions of the serial’s two missing episodes.”
The original Ice Warriors were as reptilian-looking as the budget and the state of special effects allowed back in 1967 (see photos below). In fact, Steven Moffat wasn’t originally keen on them making a return, but Mark Gatiss finally wore him down and convinced him that “they weren’t a rubbish monster.”
Up until now, the only time the Ice Warriors were referenced in the reboot era was in the special The Waters of Mars when David Tennant mentions them briefly stating, “They tell legends of Mars from long ago, of a fine and noble race who built an empire out of snow. The Ice Warriors.” A brief glimpse of the 2013 version was first seen in the image of Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman riding down the iconic Shard on a motorbike with villains reflected in the shattering glass.
