A priest with limited options walks into the Lord of Hell’s bar seeking assistance on episode 9 of Lucifer. We’re just waiting for the punchline.
After last week’s bombshell reveal that Dan is actually a dirty cop (or is he?), we’d been hoping to glean some additional clues from the promotional material for Lucifer episode 9, but they’re certainly playing those cards close to their chest.
Instead, the preview for this week teases Chloe and Lucifer’s latest case, which seems to be providing endless amusement to one of them, at the very least.
Lucifer has a bit of a reputation in Los Angeles, but it may not be the one you’re expecting. Father Frank Lawrence has come to Lux seeking Lucifer’s assistance, because he’s something of a “fixer” — one that people turn to when they’ve run out of options. Are we to believe that this man of faith isn’t as clean-cut as we’d initially assume? Lucifer isn’t exactly someone that does things by the book, particularly the Biblical kind, despite being signed on as a consultant to the LAPD. Is Father Lawrence willing to step over a moral line in order to fix whatever situation he’s found himself in?
We’d guess “not exactly,” as Chloe shows up at his church, presumably to investigate his case — not that Lucifer is making that easy, of course, as he slips into a Confessional in order to listen to someone’s sins. We can’t say that we’d expect anything less from him, at this point.
It’s what the preview isn’t saying, however, that is the most intriguing.
Dan, who was outed as Malcolm’s shooter on the last episode, is suspiciously absent. Per the synopsis, we know that Malcolm will be keeping tabs on him — but is that because he wants to manipulate Dan for nefarious reasons? We’re sure that we’ll find out more over the course of the episode, but something just isn’t adding up for us. Malcolm is just a little too shady still, and as for Dan? We’ve not convinced his being dirty is as straight forward as “Et Tu, Doctor?” would have us believe.
Also absent is Maze — who Lucifer dismissed at the end of episode 8. Will she still be performing her duties at Lux, as we’ll be spending at least some portion of the episode there, or has she made her way back to hell? Her role as Lucifer’s protector is complicated, and we certainly won’t have seen the last of her. Perhaps she’ll team up with Amenadiel for real this time, in order to reinstate Lucifer to Hell. She does have that feather in her possession, after all.
The synopsis for Lucifer 1×09, “A Priest Walks into a Bar,” reads, “A priest seeks out Lucifer’s help when he suspects an underground drug operation has set up shop at a neighborhood youth center. Meanwhile, Malcolm manipulates a way to keep an eye on Dan.”
Lucifer 1×09, “A Priest Walks into a Bar,” airs Monday, March 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
