The Avengers sequel director, Joss Whedon, is speaking for the first time about the casting of James Ultron in the titular villain role.
It was announced nearly two weeks ago that James Spader would play Ultron in The Avengers: Age of Ultron when it opens in theaters summer 2015.
There was speculation that Jarvis (Iron Man’s computer sidekick) would turn into Ultron, but with the casting of Spader, it seems director Joss Whedon will be creating a whole new origins story.
Joss Whedon has decided to speak about some of the reasons for casting Spader as Ultron and it seems he was very happy to snag the actor for the role. “Spader was my first and only choice,” he said.
“He’s got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling. But he’s also very human and humorous. Ultron is not HAL. Spader can play all of the levels. He’s the guy to break The Avengers into pieces.”
The comments were made to Marvel’s official blog.
In other interviews surrounding the character of Ultron, Whedon has said that he will be re-writing the enemy’s backstory so that he can surprise audiences no matter what they’re Marvel comic background may be. It’s nice to see Whedon so excited about the character and the actor chosen to voice the role.
Spader will most likely also get to do some motion capture for Ultron, as it’s what Whedon did with Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers. It certainly helps audiences buy the CGI illusions and we don’t expect anything less with the Ultron character.
The Avengers sequel Age of Ultron opens in theaters May 1, 2015.
